S Vonn Bell (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

I was told today that according to Brent Hubbs of VolQuest.com, our scholarship numbers have hurt our chances of landing Bell and we are virtually out because of that.

I tried arguing with the guy that there was no way we don't leave a spot open for Bell and told him this Brent Hubbs guy must be an idiot. You'd have thought I had brought up Charles Woodson beating out Manning for the Heisman.

Our scholarship numbers putting us out of the game, while Withers has an in-home on the day before Vonn shuts things down.......

I am sure Withers visit was just a courtesy visit to let Vonn know that OSU didn't have room for him, and to wish him well at UT.:shake: I am also certain that all of the limitless activity of the entire staff the last month has nothing to do with adding more players to this class, but was just a ploy to build more frequent flyer miles. Yea right... I imagine the talk that both UA and OSU are now out will build alot of excitement on the Vol boards, and maybe even sell some subscriptions. Mike Farrell sure hasn't been helping on that front.

The only way that makes sense is if Withers told Bell that they can't guarantee that they can send him a LOI to sign on Wednesday. There are a set amount they can send out they are certainly still waiting on some other guys. They don't want to lose someone they want just because they sent out an LOI to someone else who they aren't sure will pick them.

not going to happen

We will have plenty of LOIs to send out. The only potential issue for OSU is the 82 number by next fall. That can be dealt with between now and next fall.

My guess is that the Volunteer guy is referring to DB depth and not OSU dropping Bell, which would be ludicrous.

It does seem like Bell wants to start as a freshman and is very interested in the depth charts and other incoming recruits. The path to playing time at OSU is relatively open and the competition not overly stiff, but in comparison to Tennessee, it could be an issue. They basically have nothing in terms of Safety commits whereas we have Thompson, possibly Burrows and possibly Lee and Worley.

I don't think Bell should be overly scared of the competition here, but maybe he wants a starting job served up on a platter and if so, that could be the allure of the Vols.

My hope is that it is a goldilocks type situation. The competition is too stiff at Bama, too weak at UT and just right at OSU.

Agreed, hes not seeing pt at S at alabama for another year or 2. And ut is hot garbage right now. Butch jones stepped into a bad situation with a program not as hot as years past. Osu makes the most sense to me too. But im just another osu fan, so I may be a tad biased

Obviously tOSU is the optimal choice - great academics, tradition rich football program, best coaching staff in the country, passionate fanbase, etc. However, Bell really can't go wrong. He is a lifelong UT fan and there is something to be said about playing for the team you grew up watching and rooting for. 'Bama is a powerhouse right now, albeit a powerhouse supported by a fanbase that is largely composed of uneducated, toothless, inbred white trash. Still, they have been, and for the foreseeable future, will be a national championship contender.

Just my completely unbiased opinion.....:sneaky:

Bell and playing time...

If you look at all three teams left in contention for Bell's services....OSU has the least amount of DBs on it's roster than all three. Tenn has 17 coming back...barring any transfers due to new HC Jones' attrition. I can't count high enough to determine how many Bama has but they just signed a top safety and told Bell that they want him at CB. So...with OSU at 12 DBs with 4 seniors leaving and Jamie Woods calling it quits last October (and 3-4 DBs in the 2013 class won't make it too crowded. Not to mention how does Burrows, Apple and Bell sound to you all???;-) That leaves OSU looking pretty good to land him based on the relationship the coaches have with the family, his education will be top notch, and he can possibly play right away (at least on special teams for sure). Makes the good guys look a bit more attractive...
