A heavy ?90s flavor pervades the Class of 2010 that awaits induction into the Stark County High School Football Hall of Fame.

McKinley?s Thom McDaniels, Kenny Peterson and Mike Doss join GlenOak?s Derek Fox as prominent 1990s names that are part of the class. Massillon?s Steve Luke and GlenOak?s Mark Murphy, representing the 1960s and ?70s, also were elected.

The group will be inducted in July at Skyland Pines.

Luke?s Massillon team was one of the best to grace Stark County in the era before the playoff system. As a junior, the versatile Luke stood out at center. As a senior, he filled needs at linebacker and tight end on a team the won a state title based on a poll election. Eventually, he would be a safety at Ohio State and in the NFL.

?One of my proudest moments was winning the state championship,? Luke said. ?We had so many quality players as well as quality guys.

?It was really a good core. Tim Ridgley, Tom Cardinal, Mike Mauger, Dennis Franklin, Steve Studer ... and I could keep going.?

Steve Luke File
College: Ohio State.
Packer years: 1975-'80.

Packer highlights: Fourth-round draft selection (88th overall) in 1975. Versatile safety who tied for the team lead in interceptions (4) in 1977. Had 150 tackles in 1978. Played in 90 regular-season games.

Jersey number: 46.
Residence: Columbus, Ohio.
Occupation: Retired.

For Steve Luke, it's always been about tradition and love of the game.

The former Green Bay Packer safety grew up in Massillon, Ohio, a small industrial city with a rich football tradition.

While Luke rooted for his home state Cleveland Browns, he also became a fan of an NFL powerhouse in another small city with a storied football history.

"After watching the Ice Bowl and the first two Super Bowls, I became a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers," Luke said. "Bart Starr. Jim Taylor. Ray Nitschke. All those great players. . . . I too was a Packer, a small part of a special tradition with all those championships."

But first he was a Tiger, and then a Buckeye.

After starring at Massillon High School as a linebacker and tight end, Luke played for the legendary Woody Hayes at Ohio State, a football factory in the talent-laden Big Ten Conference.

By his senior year, Luke had been to three Rose Bowls and earned all-Big Ten and honorable mention All-American accolades as a defensive back.

"Back in high school, I was a center, linebacker and tight end. I didn't care where I lined up. I just loved to play football."

MASSILLON ?

Steve Luke has had a first-hand opportunity to see just what kind of mark first-year head coach Urban Meyer has been able to put on the Ohio State football program while living in Columbus.

And the former Massillon Tiger and Ohio State Buckeye standout likes what he sees.

?First of all, the situation he walked into, it would be difficult for any coach,? Luke said prior to addressing the Massillon Tiger Touchdown Club Tuesday. ?It would be difficult for any coach. He?s handled it very well and I think he?s inspired our players to the point that they are trying to play to the level that we are accustomed to in Buckeye football.?
