S Ronnie “Rocket” Hickman (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

it's getting to the point where you come in with a major injury or one happens in your first year you get passed bye. I think his "window" if he ever had one is gone. I bet he ends up in the portal. Same with Babb. Too much talent on this team and arriving. These are great kids but that's just the way it is right now.

Johnnie Dixon laughs in your face.

I know about Dixon. He was willing to wait and there was no "Portal" then. And with a arguably even more loaded roster there must be some "roster management." Day has to decide how far he wants to go with roster management. That's a reality of competing with Alabama and Clemson.

So you’re suggesting he gets rid of any freshman that suffers an injury? Seems like a decent plan for success.

We shouldn’t speculate but I’ve changed if a player transfers now I won’t hold it against them because of the coaches axe “roster management”. Players deserve more freedom of movement. Come on down Justin Fields and QBs my team without sitting out.

Different thread topic, but since you brought it up, I don't think Urban had roster management all figured out. In fact, I think he botched some roster management decisions and underused a lot of talent.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2020 AND BEYOND FROM OHIO STATE'S 10 FRESHMEN WHO REDSHIRTED LAST SEASON

S RONNIE HICKMAN

2019 in review: Hickman didn’t play a snap as a freshman as he spent the year recovering from a torn ACL suffered in October of 2018.

A look toward 2020: Before even getting to the season, Hickman will have to get through winter workouts, spring practice, summer workouts and fall camp with a healthy right knee. Should that happen, he’ll have a chance to find his way onto the depth chart. But with Ryan Day preferring a single-high safety and Josh Proctor the likely starter, he’ll likely find himself in competition with Marcus Hooker, Bryson Shaw and Lathan Ransom for the backup spot.

Long-term outlook: The coach who recruited him (Greg Schiano) and the coach he spent his first year under (Jeff Hafley) are gone. In their place stands Kerry Coombs. Provided he sticks with what Day has publicly supported and largely runs a defense with one deep safety, the competition between Hickman and the others at his position will be fierce the next few years. Hickman, once the 115th-ranked recruit in the 2019 cycle, has as much potential as anybody else at safety. So despite his ACL injury, he’ll be in the mix to start in the coming years.

Definitely deserves a bump from page 11 in this forum. Kid was flying around out there and made his presence known from the safety spot.

During the game thread I mentioned that he flashed onto the screen kinda out of nowhere the way Brendan White did. If he can continue to flash like that and remind us of Brendan, we're going to be just fine.

Yes that's exactly how I thought of him too... played physical and I dont know what it is but I feel better when he's in the game.

He is 2 inches taller though than Hooker which may not seem like a big thing but that's noticeable I think when you see the two.

Ronnie Hickman makes memorable impression in secondary
The Ohio State secondary is still working through five games to live up to the self-proclaimed Best in America mantra. Part of that process is working in new faces to the secondary to find who fits well — and where. One of those guys, Ronnie Hickman, made a good first impression on the field Saturday when he had three tackles and seemed to provide a good spark in the back end.

“Well obviously, Ronnie played in the nickel package on Saturday,” Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs said. “He’s playing an awful lot on special teams. In the era of COVID versatility, he is learning and is capable of playing both of our safety positions, what we call cover safety and what we call free safety, and the ability to play in the nickel package. So he’s a valuable guy for us and he continues to develop. He’s a big, fast guy. So our job is to coach him well, get him on the field and give him opportunities to play.

“But in a world we’re in right now, that’s true for an awful lot of players.”

Maybe Hickman showed the coaching staff he deserves a look at being in the secondary on a permanent basis.

And Ronnie is an excellent example of why the 'body bag' preseason games are so important. Putting in the new guys and see how they play cannot be replicated on the practice field. Live action is key, and to quote Yoda, 'There is no try, there is either do or do not'. We have seen several/many youngsters that either shone in the spotlight or got shown up. In league games, usually play the ones for three plus quarters, and sometimes leave them in to 'preserve a shut-out'. Personally believe it's better to blood the newbies, and see which ones rise to the occasion. Go Bucks!
