Virginia Destroyers safety Nate Salley chose to come to The Ohio State University to play football in 2002 after prepping at St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) High School.
After winning a National Championship as a freshman and starting the final 33 games of his career at free safety for the Buckeyes, it?s clear Salley made the right decision.
?As a whole, it was some of the best times of my life,? Salley said. ?I?m definitely glad I made the decision to come to Ohio State. I fell in love with it from the minute I visited it, and I?m glad I made that choice.?
Salley said his new life as a Division I college football player became real on his first day on the OSU campus.
?It was just an exciting feeling to be in college, period,? he said. ?It was a dream of mine to play D-I ball, but to be college athlete, it was a big deal to me and my family.?
Salley said the 2002 BCS National Championship Game, a 31-24 OSU win in double overtime over the University of Miami (Florida), ?was great, because it was a huge game for me, just being from Florida. When I initially chose Ohio State, everybody was like, ?What are you thinking?? People wondered why I was going there and not staying home. It was time to try something different, and Ohio State showed me I was one of their top prospects.?
Salley said Ohio State kept coming at him, and that persuaded him to join a Buckeye recruiting class that included Omaha Nighthawks running back Maurice Clarett and current NFLers Troy Smith, A.J. Hawk and Santonio Holmes.
He finished his Buckeye career with 181 tackles, three interceptions, 15 passes defensed, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.
?It was a great ride,? Salley said. ?We just had a great time there. We all came in together, did well, most of the guys are still in the league, and it was great.
?I still love Columbus today. It will always have a special place in my heart. That time definitely changed my life and molded me into the man I am today.?
