S/LB Nate Oliver (official thread)

St. Edward 49, Springdale (Ark.) 3

St. Edward jumped out to a 42-0 halftime lead and rolled past Springdale.

Ohio State-recruit Nate Oliver, who had a 46-yard punt return and 26-yard interception return for touchdowns, was named game MVP. Frank Edmonds ran for 129 yards and three TDs on 18 carries.

Nate's a football player, regardless of whatever measurables are being reported.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Chaminade can't hold late leadChaminade-Madonna held the lead for three quarters, but the Lions could not stop a late St. Edward drive and lost.
BY JOSEPH GOODMAN

LAKEWOOD, Ohio - For three quarters Saturday, Chaminade-Madonna was the best high school football team in all of Cleveland.

When it came time to finish the job, however, the Lions looked like another overmatched Class 2A team playing against a bully four classes its senior. Chaminade led by a point entering the fourth quarter but then gave way to Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward and its super-sized offensive line. St. Edward scored a late touchdown -- its first lead of the game -- and beat Chaminade 14-7.

Chaminade prepared itself for a fourth-quarter battle this week. The team knew the depth of its thin but talented roster would be tested against a bona fide large-school power. Chaminade has won two state championships in the past three years but has yet to outlast a high school football giant. The team lost in Texas in 2005. ''Finish,'' was the team's mantra. Afterward, several players cried.

''We knew we had to play to the finish, and we didn't do it,'' Chaminade linebacker Xavier Stinson said. ``We slacked off because we knew we had the lead and we let it go to our heads.''

The loss snapped Chaminade's 14-game winning streak, which dates to last season's loss against Miami Booker T. Washington. Ranked No. 1 in The Miami Herald's South Florida Top 20, Chaminade (3-1) is also ranked No. 1 in Class 2A and No. 19 nationally by StudentSports Magazine.

St. Edward (4-1) entered the game ranked No. 23 by StudentSports and No. 4 statewide in Ohio's Division I, the largest classification in the state. The Eagles beat Arkansas Springdale last week in the USA vs. Ohio Kirk Herbstreit Challenge. The week prior to the Herbstreit Challenge, St. Edward lost to Cincinnati St. Xavier 10-7. St. Xavier, ranked among the nation's top five high school football teams, lost to Lakeland 26-23 in overtime of the Herbstreit Challenge. Lakeland, crowned the 2005 national champ by USA Today, is again ranked among the nation's best this season.

A CLOSE GAME

A win would have given Chaminade plenty to brag about. And with less than nine minutes left in the game, it appeared the Lions were going to get out of Cleveland with a win against the proud city's top-ranked team.

But then the home team got the ball and showed Chaminade and its Wing-T offense what the real definition of tough running really means.

With a drive beginning at the 49-yard line, the Eagles went straight at Chaminade with senior running back Frank Edmonds. Chaminade couldn't stop him. The entire 11-play drive came on the ground. Edmonds, who finished with 161 yards on 27 carries, twisted his ankle on the drive. Still, Chaminade couldn't stop him.

Edmonds scored with four minutes left. The 5-yard run -- and its accompanying two-point conversion -- gave St. Edward its first lead at 14-7.

STRONG PLAY

''We knew it was going to be one of those games that comes down to the fourth quarter,'' Chaminade coach Mark Guandolo said. ``[St. Edward] just played stronger than we did.''

The drive ate away minutes for a Chaminade offense that's not designed to come from behind. The Lions went three and out on their next position, forced St. Edward to punt and then watched their quarterback, Chad Rynning, get sacked twice in the final 30 seconds of the game.

''We had a couple players that didn't make the trip,'' Chaminade senior wide receiver/defensive back Kamar Aiken said. ``But I'm not going to use that as an excuse.''

Chaminade senior outside linebacker Eain Smith, a key starter, did not travel with the team.

''It was for disciplinary reasons,'' Guandolo said.

Aiken caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Rynning to give Chaminade its lead with 1:34 left in the first quarter. St. Edward moved the ball well in the first half but settled for a pair of field goals.

Nate Oliver, St. Edward's best player, turned in the game's top performance. A verbal commitment to Ohio State, Oliver contained Chaminade's Wing-T the entire game and made several impressive stops.

He finished with 11 tackles and also had several important runs in the fourth quarter when Edmonds twisted his ankle
