Kurt Coleman ? leader?
He?s been in the league for only one year, but safety Kurt Coleman is already starting to become a leader on the Eagles' defense.
With Quintin Mikell leaving the team as a free agent, Coleman is one of the young safeties on the roster along with second-year man Nate Allen, rookie Jaiquawn Jarrett and Jarrad Page, who at 26 is the elder statesman of the group.
?I think even at Ohio State or even in high school, you have to earn the reputation, have to earn the leadership,? Coleman said. ?So last year, I was learning a lot from [Mikell] and just going to work.
?It?s put a challenge on me, but I like it.?
Coleman started only two games last season, but could very well be a starter for the Birds this season. Furthermore, he might not just be a starter, he might be a leader for the young Eagles? safeties.
?Now you?re kind of put into a role where you have to talk, but I think I?ve earned enough trust in the players and they see it in my work ethic that they can trust me,? Coleman said. ?It?s not about showing who is boss, it?s about making sure everyone is on the same page.?
Jarrett, the Eagles? second-round selection out of Temple is already reaping the benefits of the Eagles? newest leader.
?Kurt is a great person,? Jarrett said. ?He helped me a lot, even when we roomed together in camp. He helped me learn the playbook and help me become a pro. Him being close to me and his locker being close to me is very helpful.?
Coleman Knows Value Of Finale
By Max Rappaport
One year ago, starting free safety Kurt Coleman was preparing, just like many of his teammates are this week, for the preseason finale against the Jets, whom the Eagles have played in the preseason 11 straight years.
Prior to that game, Coleman was entrenched in a roster battle with Quintin Demps and Macho Harris. All three safeties were not going to make the final cut, so the seventh-round pick knew that he had to shine in the final preseason game if he wanted to secure his spot on the roster over two veterans.
The Ohio State alum had a coming out party in that game, recovering two fumbles and returning them both for touchdowns. As you know, the rest is history. Coleman made the team and contributed in his rookie year taking over the free safety job late in the season after an injury to Nate Allen. Now, he is entrenched as the starter at free safety and has quickly become one of the young leaders on defense.
?The fourth preseason game is big for guys trying to make the roster,? Coleman said. ?It?s a chance for second- and third-string guys to play the whole game. ?

Coleman ready to make mark in Eagles secondary
POSTED: September 5, 2011
By Marc Narducci
Inquirer Staff Writer
On an Eagles team with enviable depth at cornerback, one of the keys to the secondary is the development of second-year free safety Kurt Coleman.
While cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie have captured the headlines, Coleman quietly has become a key factor in his role as quarterback of the defense
The 23-year-old Coleman got his first start - and interception - on Nov. 15 last season against Washington because Nate Allen had a neck injury.
Allen ruptured a patellar knee tendon Dec. 19 in a road game against the New York Giants, and Coleman moved into the starting lineup the next week. He made eight tackles in a loss to the visiting Minnesota Vikings.
He made eight more tackles two weeks later in the Eagles' playoff loss to Green Bay.
Coleman has carried that play into his second preseason. He led the Eagles in tackles in their second and third preseason games, with 11 against Pittsburgh and five against the Cleveland Browns.
"I am back there and have played a lot of high-pressure games and feel comfortable in this defensive system," he said.
Coleman's teammates are impressed because he has played beyond his years. Not known for blazing speed, Coleman prides himself on being in the right place at the right time, and his teammates have noticed.
"He's one guy who has progressed a lot and matured a lot as a player," defensive end Trent Cole said. "He is one player who has really come a long way."
Although he was a three-year starter at perennial Big Ten power Ohio State, Coleman wasn't drafted until the seventh round in 2010 - the 244th player taken overall. He thought he should have been drafted earlier and is determined to show it via his performance.
"I wouldn't say I have a chip on my shoulder, to prove myself," he said. "I know what I am capable of, and I just want to go out and display my talent."
