S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

Coleman, Tatum More Than Just Fellow Buckeyes

BETHLEHEM, Pa. ? Kurt Coleman was saddened this week when he learned that Jack Tatum had died at age 61. Coleman, a rookie safety with the Eagles, had a special bond with the former Oakland Raider.

Both men went to Ohio State and earned All-America honors at the safety position. But more than that, both were involved in tragic collisions on the field. In 1978, a Tatum hit left New England receiver Darryl Stingley paralyzed. In 2006, a Coleman tackle in spring practice caused a similar injury to teammate Tyson Gentry.

?I already knew Jack ? we had met before,? Coleman said, ?but after that [incident] we talked again. He told me it was part of the game and those things happen. You never want to see anyone hurt, but it happens sometimes.?

The pro scouts were concerned about Coleman?s size, which is why he fell in the draft. He does look smaller than the height and weight listed on the program. But he didn?t miss a game in college, and if you look at the best safeties in the league, most are 5-10 or 5-11. So how much does size matter, really?

Jack Tatum, for example, was 5-10 and weighed maybe 205, but there was no harder hitter in the league.

?[Tatum] was done playing before I was born,? the 22-year-old Coleman said, ?but I know all about him. I?ve seen the films and heard the stories. He?s a legend at Ohio State. He put down the stones for every generation of players that followed. We walked on that path.

?When I met Jack and we talked, he stressed the fact that football was all about heart and intensity. If you have that, you can play.?

Camp Confidential: Rookie Safety Knows Where to Eat
Coleman gets familiar with Philly before camp
By DAN STAMM

Eagles seventh-round draft choice Kurt Coleman seems to already have a feel for what the Bleeding Green Nation is all about.

?The first thing I would say about Philly is that I know that the fans love their teams and they are very serious about their sports,? the rookie safety said.

So how did a kid from Ohio who attended Ohio State get such a good feel for the city of Brotherly Love.

?I have a couple of family members in Philly? they are very loyal to the team and very passionate about it.?

And staying with his family leading up to training camp let Coleman onto a little Philly secret.

?From what I?ve seen it?s the local spots that are the best spots (to eat),? said the rookie.

?I haven?t had bad food yet, which is very good,? he said with a smile.

Seems like the food at camp might not be as good, according to one of Coleman's Tweets.

The Birds drafted the 22-year-old with their final pick but Coleman faces an uphill battle to make the roster especially since that at 5-foot-11, 195 pounds he is considered undersized for a safety.

But the uncertainty of making the team hasn?t stopped Coleman from being optimistic.

?Obviously I want to start but that?s just going to come with time and if the opportunity presents itself,? he said.

And he knows what he that will take at Lehigh.

?It?s gonna be a fun time for me to get out there and really show the fans what I?m about -- my heart, my work ethic.?

Kurt Coleman is going to be fun to watch this year. He led the team with 5 tackles and broke up a pass. Kurt hit the receiver just after the ball got there and Kurt was able to knock it away from the guy before he could catch it. He also did well on STs.

Seventh-round draft pick Kurt Coleman made his name known. He had six tackles including a brutal hit on special teams coverage.

"I had a good time out there," Coleman said about his first NFL preseason game. "Anytime you can put big a lick on somebody it feels real good."

Coleman's Presence Felt Friday Night

Strong safety Kurt Coleman might only be 5-11, 195 pounds, but don't tell Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker that.

Going for the first down on a fourth-and-3 early in the second quarter, Jaguars quarterback David Garrard appeared to have Sims-Walker deep down the right seam for a first down. However, Coleman came over from his spot as the middle safety and popped Sims-Walker to jar the ball loose. Sims-Walker exited the game with a shoulder injury and the Jaguars' first-team offense was done for the night.

"That's not allowed. You can't come across the middle and come down with the ball," Coleman said. "I wanted to lay a good lick on him whether he caught it or not. I happened to knock it out."

Coleman led the Eagles with five tackles and added another one on special teams. The seventh-round draft pick out of Ohio State was a team captain and All-American in his senior season. Even though he was on the field against veteran players, Coleman wanted to make sure it was only his helmet and uniform numbers that looked green.

"I don't look at it like I'm a rookie. I've been here for five months now. I'm very acquainted with the system, with the team," Coleman said. "I just feel very comfortable out there making plays. I feel very natural. Even though my status is a rookie, I don't want to play like a rookie."

And with hits like the one Coleman dished out Friday night, it puts offenses on alert and makes the defense's job that much easier.

"I think doing that early and often in the game sets a tone for the defense and I think the offense kind of became wary of coming across the middle," Coleman said. "That's the way you want to do it. This defense is reckless. That's how we play."

Kurt is a baller, what a steal. I thought he was a top 5 safety in the draft and to be honest didnt see much difference between him and Donte Whitner. If anything we was more productive at tOSU. Good to see he is playing so well. Still shaking my head about all those teams passing him by. Go Bucks

I got pissed every time the Browns passed on him and especially when they drafted another Safety. Someone in the Browns organization needs to realize that Browns fans like Buckeyes.

So frustrating...Kurt will be more productive than T.J. Ward..mark it down. And what was wrong with Thaddeus....guy has been wowing the Pittsburgh coaching staff.

Let me join this line...

Trying to take as much bias out of the situation as possible, Coleman and Thad would have added to the Browns roster immensely. Hated to have them get passed over by the organization.

Coleman will be a very very solid pro.

Kurt Coleman, Big Hits, Eagles Fans
Coleman Licks His Chops at Playing Opportunity
Dan Stamm/NBCPhiladelphia.com

Eagles seventh-round pick Kurt Coleman was called into some extra duty during his first preseason game Friday night. The rookie safety was forced into playing most of the final three quarters against Jacksonville after fellow backup safeties Antoine Harris and Quintin Demps went down with injuries.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder responded with some big hits and a pass defended while leading the Birds with six tackles.

We caught up with Coleman after the game to get his thoughts:

On the speed of real-game action against NFL players:

?Really the speed of the game was pretty natural. I think practicing with this team we?ve gone live so many times that the speed of the game was real natural.?

On his first preseason action:

?I had a good time out there. The first couple of times you kinda got the jitterbugs -- get ?em out of there and everything just comes natural. You gotta play within your game, within the 1/11th of the defense or special teams and have fun.?

On being called to play three quarters:

?I wasn?t expecting the whole three quarters. But every play I got better and better. I gotta go back and reevaluate myself but I think the more experience the better it is for me.?

On his big special teams hit on Jags? punt returner Deji Karim:

?Anytime you can get a big lick on somebody it feels really good. Especially when you hear them make that little face that you took the wind out of them -- that?s a really good feeling.?

On the Eagles fans' energy:

?That?s what Philly fans are all about, they love their team... they respect us.?

This.

Go to a game on Sunday, or hell, even this saturday (which I'll be doing) if you don't have any Browns gear to rep, do any of the staff actually see the second most worn logo? Its the Bucks.

I'd say 95% of Browns fans are also fans of tOSU. Chances are if you we're raised a Brownies fan your favorite collegiate team is tOSU. Not its not necessarily the other way around. Obviously we have Bucks fans that are also Steelers, Chargers, Niners' fans as well.

But if you ask most Anyone from Ohio if there a Browns fan and they say yes, follow up with "are you a Buckeyes fan". Most of your responses will be... "duh". Shit even Cincy fans love the Bucks. It's the biggest thing in this state and always will be.

I was flipping around the channels watching some of the preseason replays (I think on the NFL Net.) and caught just a few minutes late in the Eagles game when the opposing team had a positive play of some sort & one of the commentators says something to the effect, "It's (the play that just happened) because Coleman isn't in there any more." Then they go on to say what a great game he had, etc.

I was sure the Bengals would've grabbed him when he started slipping in the draft. I think there are going to be more than just the Ohio teams wondering why they didn't snatch him while they had the chance.

Didinger: Eagles' Coleman Continues to Impress

Kurt Coleman was drafted 244th overall by the Eagles. His selection seems to (AP)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. ? Sean McDermott was preparing for the 2009 draft studying film of the Ohio State secondary. He was supposed to be scouting Buckeye cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, but he kept noticing this other guy.

?There was this safety who kept making plays,? McDermott said. ?I said, ?Who is that?? The (Ohio State) coaches said, ?That?s Kurt Coleman. He?s a junior.? I said, ?Gee, he?s pretty good.??

The Eagles? defensive coordinator made a mental note and filed it away. In this year?s draft, the Eagles were down to the last of their 13 selections and Kurt Coleman?s name was still on the board. With McDermott?s recommendation, the Eagles took the safety with the 244th-overall pick. It now looks like a wise decision.

Coleman played more snaps than any other Eagle in Friday?s preseason win over Jacksonville. He was going to split time between the second unit defense and special teams, but when safeties Quintin Demps and Antoine Harris were injured, Coleman had to pick up the slack. As a result, he played almost three full quarters.

?Forty snaps probably, plus special teams,? McDermott said. ?I?m sure he was tired, playing that much in the first game after three weeks of two-a-days. It takes a lot out of your legs. But he hung in there and played well.?

?I looked at it as a great opportunity to show what I could do,? Coleman said. ?When I came [to training camp] that?s all I wanted, a chance to show what I could do.?
