S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

I think the thing that will stand out about this rendition of The Game and Kurt Coleman is his altruism. With TSUN receivers refusing to catch passes that they should have, Kurt Coleman raised his hand and became TSUN's fourth-leading receiver.

An education has to be about more than material things. Kurt's performance provides more evidence that Ohio State is teaching values.

OSU notes: Coleman has big day in secondary

ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? Kurt Coleman went out in style.

Not only did the senior co-captain get a win over archrival Michigan that improved him to 4-0 in his career against the Wolverines, but the safety aided the cause with one of his best games of the season ? one that included two of the Buckeyes? four interceptions.

?This is what you dream for,? said Coleman, a three-year starter. ?I?ve worked so hard for this. I?m able to say that I left a legacy behind. It was just a great victory. It?s been a dream come true.?

Both of Coleman?s picks were highlight-reel worthy. The first came on a deflection down the sideline. The second came on a deep pass inside the Buckeyes? 5-yard line that Coleman leapt for and secured as he crashed to the turf near the sideline.

The play was initially ruled an incomplete pass with officials saying Coleman landed out of bounds. It was reviewed and overturned.

?I basically just played the ball,? Coleman said. ?I knew I caught it. I just didn?t know if I was inbounds.?

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is going to be sorry to see Coleman go.

?Kurt Coleman?s a good football player, a good leader,? Tressel said. ?He?s going to be good at the next level, I think.?

Coleman?s day ended in special fashion when he found his parents in the stands after the victory.

?I knew where they were. I just wanted to give them a hug,? he said. ?It was sad, but it was a great way to go out.?

Coleman shines in Game

POSTED: November 22, 2009

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ohio State's Kurt Coleman is one of the best safeties in the Big Ten Conference, but it's often been difficult for him to gain notoriety during his four seasons with the Buckeyes.

In years past, Ohio State's linebackers - James Laurinaitis chief among them - have been the focal point of its defense. There was also cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, who was among the top players at his position in the country.

But even with Laurinaitis and Jenkins graduating after the 2008 season, Coleman's contributions seemed to occur largely under the radar this season, as the Buckeyes' fierce defensive front assumed the identity of the defense.

Coleman, however, reminded everyone on Saturday just how critical the three-year starter at strong safety has been to Ohio State's success.

Coleman intercepted two passes, broke up two others and finished with four tackles in the Buckeyes' 21-10 victory over the Michigan Wolverines.

"This is what you dream of," said Coleman, who helped Ohio State beat Michigan for the sixth straight season. "I'm able to say I left a lasting legacy against Michigan."

Coleman's interceptions sparked another strong defensive effort by the Buckeyes, who forced five turnovers. Coleman's second pick stopped a Michigan threat early in the fourth quarter, and came after an instant-replay view. Officials on the field ruled Coleman was out of bounds, but the replay official reversed the call.

"And he almost had a third (interception)," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. "Kurt Coleman is a good football player and a good leader. He loves the game and he's going to be a good player at the next level."

Coleman had a premonition of sorts. He said he had a dream the night before the game. In the dream, Coleman intercepted a pass and the Buckeyes won.

"It wasn't as good as I played it out today," he said.

Senior safety Kurt Coleman was voted Ohio State's Most Valuable Player, it was announced today as the team held its annual awards banquet.

Coleman, from Dayton, was the driving force behind a Buckeyes' defense that led the Big Ten in turnovers forced (33) and also in turnover margin (plus 1.33 a game). He intercepted a team-high five passes and also forced three fumbles.

Coleman also received the Bill Willis Award as the outstanding defensive player and the W.W. Hayes Award as outstanding player in the Michigan game. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor received the Archie Griffin Award as the outstanding offensive player.
