Donte Whitner is giving away two Super Bowl tickets
Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2010

We mentioned on Friday that the best way to get Super Bowl tickets is to use NFLonLocation.net.

But there's another way to get two of them, free.

Bills safety Donte Whitner will be giving away two Super Bowl tickets, once he gets to 10,000 followers.

He's currently at 8,372. He needs more than 1,000 and less than 2,000. (Where's Rain Main when you need him?)

So go to Twitter.com and follow "DonteWhitner."

Charges dropped against Donte Whitner
Posted by Mike Florio on January 26, 2010

Last April, Bills safety Donte Whitner was arrested in Cleveland for aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

His apprehension included the use of a Taser gun, which prompted Whitner at one point to threaten to file a lawsuit.

Now, the matter is closed.

According to the Buffalo News, the charges were dropped after Whitner completed a "selective intervention program," which required him to meet with a probation officer over the past three months.

The outcome, though favorable to Whitner from the perspective of the criminal justice system, likely will subject him to scrutiny under the Personal Conduct Policy, since enrollment in a program of this nature still falls within the broad definition of the term "disposition of a criminal proceeding" under the policy.

Donte Whitner wants Troy Smith with the Buffalo Bills
By Starting Blocks
January 26, 2010

Would QB Troy Smith be a good fit with the Buffalo Bills? The quarterback situation with the Buffalo Bills is in such disarray that Donte Whitner, a defensive back, says the answer to the Bills' problem is Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Troy Smith.

"Not only would Troy Smith be a good fit for us, but he'd be a good for any team," Whitner told Branson Wright of Starting Blocks this morning. "He's a proven winner. We have so much uncertainly at quarterback. All Troy needs is a chance."

Whitner welshes on Super Bowl ticket giveaway
Posted by Mike Florio on February 3, 2010

On January 23, Bills safety Donte Whitner asked us via Twitter to publicize his promise to give away two Super Bowl tickets once he reached 10,000 followers. Since he seemed sincere in his promise (e.g., "Giving away the 2 tixs....SUPERBOWL TIXS!!!!!! FREE!!! FREE!!! FREE!!!! FREE!!! FREE!!!!! Follow to win!"), we decided to help him out.

So, with our help, he climbed from 8,372 followers to 10,000. Then, once he made it to 10,000, he announced the rules of the contest.

To win, the follower had to guess the scores of both conference title games.

As it turns out, no one did. So now Whitner won't be giving away the tickets.

He defended his decision with this tweet: "There's plently of people that were 'close' some almost dead on. But I never said close I said guess the scores....it was fair!"

No, Donte, it wasn't fair. You created a clear impression that someone would get the tickets once you accumulated 10,000 followers. Then, once you accumulated 10,000 followers, you created unreasonably difficult rules for winning the two tickets that you had led everyone to believe you would give away.

Whitner's status with Bills uncertain
Trade rumors rampant with Scott, Wilson back
By Mark Gaughan
NEWS SPORTS REPORTER
Updated: March 07, 2010

The Buffalo Bills' retention of two veteran safeties this week has increased speculation about the team's plans for Donte Whitner.

Neither of the safeties retained ? George Wilson and Bryan Scott ? are getting starter money at the moment. Scott signed a two-year deal for about $3 million. Wilson was retained as a restricted free agent with a one-year tender offer of $1.75 million.

But both have starting experience, and Wilson is coming off a good season in which he started 12 games at strong safety. The fact Wilson moved ahead of Whitner on the depth chart for two games in the second half of the season is the fuel for the speculation: Will the Bills' new regime deem Whitner expendable?

Whitner even got a flurry of messages from well-wishers on his Twitter account over the weekend regarding rumors he might get traded, all of which he seemed to take in stride.

"Just win, and it all goes away!" he responded.

And: "Just so people out there don't get it twisted. I do understand that people are upset about us as a team."

Jairus Byrd has a lock on the free-safety job. Wilson can play either safety spot. Scott is a strong safety.

Whitner opened the 2009 season as the Bills' starting free safety and held that spot for three games. But a thumb injury forced him to the sideline and Byrd into the free-safety spot. Byrd put a vice-grip on the job by intercepting eight passes in a five-game stretch and finishing the season with nine pickoffs, tied for the NFL lead.

When Whitner came back after two games, he started at strong safety. Then he was injured again for three games due to an ankle sprain. When he came back, for a game at Jacksonville, Wilson kept the strong-safety job. Whitner started the next three games at free safety due to an injury to Byrd. When Byrd returned for a home game against New England, Whitner went back to backup status behind Wilson.

Whitner has started 50 games over four years for the Bills and has been a versatile performer, frequently matching up in pass coverage on tight ends and slot receivers. He's a good tackler. Nevertheless, his production has not matched the expectations that came when the Bills made him the eighth overall pick in the draft in 2006. He has four career interceptions.

Meanwhile, Gailey also gave some updates on other topics:

He dismissed speculation about a potential trade of safety Donte Whitner: "Obviously it must have gotten a life of its own somewhere. We feel like we've got a strong secondary. Donte's a big part of that and is going to be a big part of that. To me you would not weaken one of your strengths. I don't know where that came from."

Bills safety Donte Whitner has been mentioned in possible trade scenarios this offseason, and if Buffalo does intend on making a move, it would have to happen over the next few weeks leading up to the draft ? when the former first-round pick?s value would be at its peak.

Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News had a chance to ask Chan Gailey about the idea of moving Whitner, which the new head coach denied, saying, ?We feel like we've got a strong secondary. Donte's a big part of that and is going to be a big part of that. To me you would not weaken one of your strengths. I don't know where that came from.?

Trading Donte Whitner would allow the Bills to address some pressing needs on their roster.

At this point of the offseason, it is hard for any of us to buy what coaches are saying to the media. And although Gailey has a point about his secondary, the Bills have so many other needs on this roster with a new coaching staff that they should explore some options with Whitner.

This secondary has depth at the safety position with Jarius Byrd, who had nine interceptions in ?09, Bryan Scott and George Wilson ? two starters in Byrd and Scott, plus a swingman in Wilson if Whitner is out of the mix.

The former Ohio State standout didn?t become the playmaker the Bills had hoped when they drafted him with the ninth overall pick in 2006, and his numbers ? four career interceptions ? show that. But, from my perspective, he was a victim of playing strong safety for the majority of his time in Buffalo under former defensive coordinator Perry Fewell?s Cover 2 scheme.

Whitner done with twitter?

Bills safety Donte Whitner and a host of other NFL players all keep fans up to date on their twitter accounts. Whitner however, is tired of dealing with the numbskulls that keep trying to drag him down.

Whitner posted this entry several hours ago.

DonteWhitner Bye bye twitter 4 good

He has since posted the following.

DonteWhitner Never put ur faith in friends. Only family

After getting in touch with Donte by text he confirmed that the negative feedback he gets is what prompted him to bid farewell to the twitter world. And it?s hard to blame him. In many cases it?s a lose-lose situation for players because if they respond to negative feedback to defend themselves they?re seen as thin skinned.

Who fits where in the safety puzzle?

The safety position is arguably one of the deepest on Buffalo?s roster with the top four on the squad all possessing starting experience. It was also one of the most jumbled positions last season due mainly to injury. It compromised a lot of roles and even forced one safety to play out of position last season.

Donte Whitner began last season as the starting free safety and made seven starts there with just a single start at strong safety. Injuries kept him out of six games.

Bryan Scott began the 2009 campaign as the starting strong safety, missed five games with a high ankle sprain and was thrust into a starting role at weak side linebacker, where he made six starts, when injuries beset the linebacking corps.

George Wilson replaced Scott at strong safety in Week 4 when he went down with a high ankle sprain and went on to make 12 starts at that spot posting single-season highs in tackles and interceptions.

Jairus Byrd had even greater success when he filled the starting free safety role in Week 4 when Whitner was injured. He started eight games there and tied for the league lead in interceptions with nine before finishing the season on injured reserve.

Under a new staff in 2010 however, some roles look as though they?ll be changing. Whitner will be returning to his more familiar strong safety role and he?s expected to be the starter heading into OTAs. Behind him will be veteran Bryan Scott and converted linebacker Jon Corto, who played safety early in his college career.

At free safety Jairus Byrd would be running with the first unit if he was all the way back from his hip surgery. That?s not expected to be the case however, during the first week of OTAs. So it?s anticipated that George Wilson will step in with the starting unit at free safety.

Second-year player Cary Harris is the third free safety. Rookie free agent Dominique Harris is considered a strong safety with fellow rookie Brett Johnson a free safety.

Things too soft under Jauron

Whitner: Things too soft under Jauron

Here's a transcript of some of what safety Donte Whitner had to say on Thursday which includes how things were too soft under former coach Dick Jauron, how the Bills are working harder under new coach Chan Gailey and how the team's strength and conditioning program and improved greatly:
Q: You?ve been confident in the past, what gives you the confidence this team can be a winner this year?
"Work. Even if we thought we were working hard before, it?s a lot harder now. So it?s almost like a welcome to the NFL type of thing. In the weight room, it?s totally different from the way we lift, the style of lifting, the things that we do, the running. You know it?s almost like going back to college. You know how hard you worked in winter conditioning in college ? running gassers and the number of gassers and the running and the lifting, and the times that we have to be here, and the amount of work we put in, it?s like being back in college. That?s what its going to take for us to win, everybody being in top shape. We?ve been in the top three the last couple years in injuries. So I think we?ll be pretty good."
Q: In hindsight were things too soft under Dick Jauron?
?Well, you know I don?t want to ruffle any feathers but I would say yes. I really feel like that. Looking at the way we work now and the way we worked as a group collectively before, yes. Totally yes."
Q: You?re doing more heavy lifting now under (strength coach) John Gamble?
?More Olympic style lifting. A lot of hang cleans, and a lot of squats. Some guys are haven?t squatted since they left college and getting up there in heavy weight. I think my max was 405. That was three or four reps. I hadn?t did that since college. That?s squatting. The way that we do it, you?re not skipping a rep. They stand there and they watch you, every rep that you take. They tell you what weight to put on and if you can?t do it, you go down a little. So it?s Olympic style lifting. That?s why you?ll see a lot of guys, their bodies have changed. Body fats have gone down, lean mass has gone up. We?re conditioning every day after practice. We didn?t do that the last four years. I think that will help us in the injury category as well."

Donte Whitner was discussing the Buffalo Bills' renewed commitment to strength and conditioning when he was asked if things were too soft under former coach Dick Jauron. That's when the veteran safety turned up the heat.

It seems Jauron's approach to training was like a weekend at Martha's Vineyard compared to new coach Chan Gailey's methods.

"Well, I don't want to ruffle any feathers but I would say yes, and I really feel like that," Whitner said Thursday during the Bills' third day of OTAs. "Looking at the way we work now and the way we worked as a group collectively before, yes. Totally yes."

Whitner hears the chatter
Chris Brown
Posted May 28, 2010

Donte Whitner had been traded close to a dozen times via media speculation this offseason. He’s read all of that and heard the negative feedback from fans. In the end though he’s glad he’s still a Bill.

Whitner said he’s taken all that negative energy and used it as motivation in preparing himself for what he hopes is his best NFL season.

“It affected me, but I think in a positive way,” said Whitner of all the talk about him. ”I haven’t missed a day of offseason conditioning. Right now I think I’m in my best shape since my rookie year. I just have a chip on my shoulder. It’s not a negative thing it’s a positive.

“It’s not taking things for granted. It’s going out there and doing whatever I have to do whether it’s being first in every sprint from conditioning to lifting the most. That’s my mindset and my focus and it’s just a positive fuel thing. It’s nothing negative. I’m glad that it happened. I’m glad that I read some of those things, and I’m glad that I’m still here so we’ll see what happens this year.”

Whitner is currently running as the first team strong safety in Buffalo’s defense.

It seemed like every time I read something, Bills S Donte Whitner was being traded to Cleveland, Washington or others. Whitner is still here and in the starting lineup and he heard all the talk, "It affected me, but in a positive way. I think I'm in the best shape since I came here my rookie year and I just have a chip on my shoulder, not a negative thing, it's positive. It's not taking things for granted. It's going out there and what ever I have to do, whether it's first in every sprint or lifting the most, that's been my mind set. I'm glad all the reports happened, I'm glad I read some of those things and I'm glad that I'm still here."

The favorite for the position seems to be Whitner, who has been a regular contributor at strong safety since the Bills made him the eighth selection of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. In an injury-shortened 2009 campaign, Whitner intercepted two passes, returning one 76 yards for his first NFL touchdown.

As a player with experience in the 4-3, Whitner acknowledged that there is a difference in the move to the 3-4. While it is a change from past years, he said that the most profound switches will be at other positions on the field.

?Our secondary can play whatever coverage in whatever defense,? said Whitner.

As a former defensive captain, Whitner has shown his leadership on the field in motivating his teammates, and as is the same for the other veterans, will begin anew under head coach Chan Gailey. Whitner was very versatile in the backfield during OTAs, moving intelligently around the field, proving that he might even be interchangeable at the safety slots.

As the position battles all heat up July 29 at St. John Fisher, the player that proves to be the starting strong safety at the end of training camp will have certainly earned his role. The edge seems to lie with Whitner, but Scott and Wilson have experience at the position in the NFL, and Corto is progressing quickly. The spot should be up for grabs when practice begins in Pittsford.

Whitner Pumped for New Scheme
Ben Hayes
By Sal Maiorana - Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

PITTSFORD - If you can find a player on the Buffalo Bills' roster who is having more fun at St. John Fisher College than Donte Whitner, more power to you.

"I'm loving it out here," said Whitner, the fifth-year safety and former first-round draft pick who is having a ball playing in Chan Gailey's 3-4 defense.

"I wish I was drafted into this scheme. It's a scheme a lot of other guys play, like Ed Reed (Ravens) and Troy Polamalu (Steelers). I don't think the Tampa 2 was really suited for my skills and allowed me to run and go play football. That's what this scheme allows me to do."

Beyond the scheme, Whitner is really enjoying the fact that Gailey is requiring the players to practice in pads and actually hit the guys with the ball. What a departure from Dick Jauron, who treated his players like China dolls during his three-plus years at the helm.

"He's got that little edge about him that you hope every one of your defensive players has," Gailey said of the 208-pound Whitner, who has made him smile with some of the licks he has delivered. "That bodes well for our defense as a whole, in my opinion."
