The tone setter

Entering the defensive backs meeting room he sits in the front row. He then makes sure that Bills top pick Leodis McKelvin is seated right next to him. When the meeting begins defensive backs coach George Catavolos runs the meeting, but Donte Whitner has some influence on it as well.
?George directs the meeting, but (Donte) is providing direction during the meeting without being the coach,? said defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.
Whitner is providing direction to McKelvin as they walk through the film. He does the same thing on Thursday evenings at his home when he and his fellow defensive backs watch more film in preparation for the upcoming game inviting everyone to make their calls as they watch the same play three times through.
On the practice field he leads by example, and on the game field he does the same. At 23-years old Donte Whitner is a tone setter.

Whitner, Hardy help Southsiders ?Get Active?

Charlie Specht, Contributing Correspondent
Posted Oct 15, 2008

While young Bills fans might enjoy playing Madden 2008 as much as Bills safety Donte Whitner or wide receiver James Hardy, at least 150 of them won?t be returning to their video game consoles anytime soon after a visit by the two Buffalo Bills players.
Whitner and Hardy visited Southside Elementary School in South Buffalo on Tuesday as part of the Buffalo Bills and United Way?s 10th annual Hometown Huddle program. The players encouraged 150 students in Southside?s after school program to put down their controllers and pick up their running shoes to get active, fit and healthy.
Whitner talked to students about balancing their time indoors and outdoors. He encouraged students to make healthier choices, such as eating more carrots and less candy. He stressed the importance of spending less time in front of the television and more time outside being active.

Donte sets the example

It's great to see Donte get some love.....

c. All you high-school coaches out there having trouble teaching your defense how to tackle and wrap up in the open field need to get video of the Buffalo-San Diego game. Early in the third quarter, Bills safety Donte Whitner wrapped up wideout Legedu Naanee in the flat for a gain of three. Perfect.

Versatile Whitner assumes three positions

By Allen Wilson - News Sports Reporter
Updated: 10/19/08 11:06 PM

The Buffalo Bills went into Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers without several defensive players.
Their solution? Play Donte Whitner at several positions.
With cornerbacks Terrence McGee and Ashton Youboty sidelined with injuries, Whitner stepped in and played corner in the base and nickel packages. He also played a lot at free safety as well as his normal strong safety spot.
Whitner's versatility helped make up for some of the missing players and proved to be a key to the Bills' 23-14 victory.

Whitner again at free safety

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted Oct 22, 2008

For the second straight week Donte Whitner was lining up at free safety on defense. Though last week it was deemed a strategic move to put Bryan Scott at strong safety to match up with Antonio Gates with Whitner in centerfield, there?s a growing feeling that it just might be a permanent lineup change.
Bills head coach Dick Jauron however, isn?t ready to go that far.
?I think a lot of it will depend on what we want to do in that week,? said Jauron when asked if Scott will remain at strong safety. ?Really we feel like we have five good safeties. That?s why they?re on the roster. Bryan and John Wendling are big safeties by any standards. George (Wilson) we feel like we can play George any time and not miss anything and Ko (Simpson) has played very well up until his injury and he?s kind of working back. So we feel lucky that we have those five guys and they all can serve different roles for us.?
But Simpson practiced fully last Thursday and Friday coming off a hamstring strain and is not on the injury report this week.
Whitner confirmed that he saw a healthy amount of action at the free safety position in practice Wednesday.

Buffalo stampede: Bills on move with rising star at safety

05:10 PM CDT on Tuesday, October 21, 2008

There is a film clip on YouTube of Buffalo's selection of Ohio State safety Donte Whitner with the eighth overall pick of the 2006 NFL draft.
Whitner keeps that clip on his home computer ? plus his Web site, MySpace page and blog, for that matter ? to remind him of how humble his NFL beginnings were.
Whitner was perceived as a draft-day reach by media pundits and fans. The YouTube clip shows a fan screaming after the selection, "Who?" The pick also was roundly booed at NFL Draft Central in New York that day.
"I remember how I felt," Whitner said. "I remember how much it hurt. I always keep that in mind. I use that to motivate me and drive me. As hard as I worked to prepare for the combine and draft so I could get drafted that high ? then to get booed really hurt."

Whitner goes to school

Contest leads Bills safety to Niagara Catholic

By Mark Gaughan
News Sports Reporter
Niagara Catholic freshman Adam Winkworth broke a bone in his foot in the first game of his school?s varsity soccer season this fall.

That will not be what he remembers most about his first semester of high school; not after Tuesday, when he drove to school in a limousine along with Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner.
Winkworth, a 13-year-old from Youngstown, was one of 34 youths nationwide who won a random drawing in the ?NFL Take a Player to School? Contest, sponsored by the league and JCPenney.

Injury update

Safety Donte Whitner, who lined up at cornerback a few times against the Jets, was injured late in the fourth quarter. Whitner appeared to injure his arm or shoulder on the play, though Jauron offered little on the situation after the game, other than too say Whitner returned to the game. After the game, Whitner was spotted in the locker room with his right arm in a sling.

Bills S Whitner out with separated shoulder

By JOHN WAWROW

Published November 3, 2008 at 11:19 a.m.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) _ If the Buffalo Bills are going to make good on strong safety Donte Whitner's bold playoff guarantee this season, they're going to have to start making that run without him.
Whitner is expected to miss a significant amount of time with a separated right shoulder, an injury that coach Dick Jauron termed to be "fairly significant" on Monday. Jauron wouldn't say how much time Whitner is expected to miss except to note that the player is out on a week-to-week basis.
That's not good for the suddenly reeling Bills (5-3), who have dropped three of four and prepare to play at New England (5-3) on Sunday in a critical matchup between AFC East rivals.
Buffalo has already squandered whatever momentum it had generated since getting off to a 4-0 start, and is now stuck in a three-way tie, rounded out by the New York Jets, atop the division. Miami (4-4) rounds out the tightly contested race.

Whitner fares well in pads practice

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted Nov 13, 2008

Players in Buffalo?s locker room know not to doubt defensive co-captain Donte Whitner. After coming through Thursday?s pads practice with his teammates, Whitner?s head coach is a bit more encouraged than he was on Wednesday.
?Donte had another good day so we?re a little bit optimistic, but we?ve got a ways to go and that?s a good thing too,? said Jauron in reference to the Monday night game.
Whitner was getting treatment after practice and was not available for comment.
Range of motion in his shoulder does not appear to be an issue as Whitner was signaling to members of the coaching staff to throw passes high to him during individual position drills so he could reach over his head to practice interceptions.

Whitner wants more spunk, less sulk out of Bills

The Associated Press

Published November 15, 2008 at 10:52 a.m.
Updated November 15, 2008 at 3:14 p.m.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) _ Seeing his team lose its third straight game last week against New England, injured Bills safety Donte Whitner was helpless as he slumped in his couch.
Watching Buffalo get dismantled while sitting at home nursing a separated shoulder, Whitner was dumbfounded with what had happened to a Buffalo team that had such spark and spunk while winning five of its first six games.
"It looked like everybody was straining and stressing and trying to make plays and compensate for what they think is missing instead of locking in and focusing on their individual job and having fun doing it," Whitner said. "During the week is when we put our work in. The things we do in practice will transfer over to the football field on game day. So there's no need to stress and do all those things."
Whitner hopes he can return from his one-game absence and be ready when Buffalo hosts the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. Though he's listed as questionable, Whitner is doing his best to play against his hometown team.

Whitner returns, then exits with shoulder injury

By Allen Wilson
News Sports Reporter

The good news is the Buffalo Bills got strong safety Donte Whitner back.

The bad news is he couldn't finish what he started.
The good news is the Bills' secondary finally showed signs of health.
The bad news is their good fortunate didn't last very long.
Playing less than two weeks after suffering a separated right shoulder, Whitner made an earlier-than-expected return to the lineup. But depending on the grade ? with Grade 5 being the most serious ? separated shoulders can take weeks to heal.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.: Strong safety Donte Whitner returned to practice Wednesday, creating the chance the Buffalo Bills' defensive leader will be ready to play against San Francisco this weekend.
Coach Dick Jauron said he'll have a better idea of Whitner's status after the team practices in pads on Thursday. Whitner missed a 54-31 win at Kansas City last weekend, and has been in action for only two quarters over the past three games since separating his right shoulder in a 26-17 loss to the New York Jets on Nov. 2.
