S Anderson Russell (official thread)

Anderson Russell says others also deserve blame for OSU scandal
By Shemar Woods

Update, June 17: Russell said he shared a car with his brother, not that his brother drove him around campus, as we said below--Eds.

Redskins safety Anderson Russell doesn’t agree with the criticism his former Ohio State teammate, Terrelle Pryor, and coach, Jim Tressel, have received over the last serveral months for wrongdoing in Columbus.

Russell spent two years with Pryor and four years playing for Tressel before he signed with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent a year ago. In his opinion, too few people have been held responsible for the activities that forced Tressel to resign and resulted in Pryor’s suspension and decision not to return to Ohio State.

Pryor announced earlier this month that he would not return to the Buckeyes for his senior year. He had been suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for accepting cash and discounted tattoos from a Columbus tattoo-parlor owner.

An NCAA investigation led to the forced resignation of Tressel on May 30. Tressel has admitted he knew his players were taking improper benefits but covered it up for more than nine months before Ohio State officials discovered that.

“I’m not saying that it’s not anybody’s fault in particular, but I don’t think all of it should have come down on coach Tressel,” Russell said. “It’s the people offering the improper benefits in the first place. That shouldn’t be happening. And the kids should know that they’re not supposed to accept them. And then on top of that, the NCAA needs to be more explicit about what specifically is and is not an improper benefit.”

Russell said he was fortunate to have an academic scholarship and steered clear of NCAA violations. He didn’t own a car, because his brother, who also went to OSU, drove him around campus. His former teammate, however, is trying to explain several car notes.

“It’s hard for a young kid being thrown in the spotlight like that right out of high school, but he’s been in college for three years now,” Russell said. “I’m sure he’s used to it. He’s been the face of our team ever since he got there. He was a good kid. He just made some bad decisions. Nobody’s perfect.”

Three days before they open the preseason against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Redskins have released their first unofficial depth chart of the year. There aren?t a ton of surprises, but it?s still worth noting where everyone stands as the team embarks on some live-action games. Let?s run through the highlights.

the top safeties are Reed Doughty and Chris Horton in LaRon Landry?s place at strong safety and O.J. Atogwe and Anderson Russell at free safety.

Safety (4)

Looking good: LaRon Landry, Oshiomogho Atogwe, Reed Doughty, Chris Horton.

On the bubble: Kareem Moore, DeJon Gomes, Anderson Russell, Davonte Shannon.

Thoughts: Landry and Atogwe have yet to get on the field in a preseason game, but are safe and expected to play Thursday. Moore still isn?t ready to return yet. Gomes has looked good in preseason, but still might wind up on the practice squad at a crowded position.

looking like a long shot for Anderson to make the roster...although he could still qualify for the practice squad

Four players -- fourth-year veteran Chris Horton, second-year pro Anderson Russell and rookies DeJon Gomes and Davonte Shannon -- are battling for that backup free safety spot.

Russell spent much of his rookie season in 2010 on the practice squad, then tore his ACL in his second game. He played free safety in college, and appears more natural in coverage than Horton does. But he hasn?t played nearly as much this preseason as Gomes has. Russell appears to be a solid contributor on special teams as well, however.

Redskins who hurt their cause on Thursday
By Rick Maese

Anderson Russell ? When there are precious few roster spots to go around, every mistake seems amplified. In the second quarter, the Bucs had a 30-yard completion and entered Washington territory for the first time. Russell was flagged for a horse-collar tackle, adding 15 yards to the play.

On the whole, Russell needed to distinguish himself in a crowded secondary. Several other defensive backs -- Reggie Jones and Brandyn Thompson, among them -- struggled in their final audition for coaches, but Anderson had a chance to sneak on the roster.

Best guess: Released.

RUSSELL'S TAKE: Speaking with The Associated Press at a Washington Redskins training camp a while back, here's what former Ohio State DB Anderson Russell had to say about the scandals at alma mater: "This is something that goes on all over the country. You just got to make a decision to stay away from that stuff (that violates NCAA rules). I don't know if it's upbringing or knowing the difference between right and wrong, but I just never got involved with any of that. At the end of the day, our reason for being there was to get an education. I got my degree in communications in four years. My roommate, Malcolm Jenkins, got his degree in four years.

"There's definitely rules at Ohio State. Everybody knows what's right and wrong. The exception was that we didn't know that selling your memorabilia was an NCAA violation. The rings are ours. They have our names on 'em. You've got guys that sold their stuff after their eligibility was used up. National championship rings from years ago show up on eBay.

"I feel bad for coach (Jim) Tressel. It's not his fault. You've got 110 guys on the team and you want one guy to be responsible for what every single person is doing off the field? It's impossible.

"Coach Fickell is a great coach. Honestly, if coach Tressel had stayed until he retired, I think coach Fick would have gotten the job. He got mentioned for the Notre Dame job when I was in school, but he stayed. He's great on game day, man. He'll whip you a little bit in practice, but it's all for the benefit of the team and then on game day, any mistakes that are made or any corrections we need to make, he's real calm about it. That's a good thing to have on game day because you don't want somebody all in your face when you're trying to focus.

"I don't see why players wouldn't go there. At the end of the day, it's still Ohio State. Coach Tressel made it a great place to go and he was a great role model for your son, but I think this will blow over with time. Hopefully, coach Fick gets to stay.

"What happened is going to linger this year, but after that, it will blow over because I think we'll be successful this year. A lot of it depends on what the NCAA decides to do. If they ban us from bowl games and everything, like, that's going to really change a lot of kids' minds."

Dolphins signed WR Chris Hogan, DBs Vince Agnew, Jonathan Wade, Anderson Russell, and Marcus Brown, LB Jonathan Freeny, and NT Isaako Aaitui to reserve/future contracts.
Hogan is a 2011 undrafted free agent out of Monmouth. The same goes for Aaitui, although he's out of UNLV. Wade, Russell, and Brown have NFL experience. The former appeared in two games this season, playing on special teams. Jan. 5

SAFETIES (6): FS/SS Reshad Jones, SS Tyrell Johnson, FS Chris Clemons, FS Tyrone Culver, FS Jimmy Wilson, SS Anderson Russell

The Number: The Dolphins have kept four or five safeties on the 53-man roster for the past four seasons.

The Breakdown: The Dolphins intend to make the free safety and strong safety spots interchangeable, which means both starters must be able to cover ground, and provide assistance in run support. The days of one safety serving one rule, and the other doing the rest are over. Jones, Clemons and Culver have all spent time as the starting free safety the past two seasons. Johnson was signed to add depth, but much like everyone else in this unit he could become Coyle?s newest safety reclamation project, following in the footsteps of Chris Crocker, Gibril Wilson and Reggie Nelson. Wilson played cornerback last year, but the Dolphins have moved this 5-foot-11, 185 pounder back to safety, the position he played in his final season at Montana. Who starts at safety is any one?s guess, but five of the six contenders are very athletic. However, intelligence usually indicates who excels at this position.
