Rutgers @ tOSU, Sat Oct 1, 3:30pm, BTN

The Buckeyes are #1 in the B1G in PE
The Scarlet Knights are #12

This is similar to the 2021 rankings of #1 and #13 respectively. But those numbers are for the whole year.

For just September 2021, OSU was #2 in the conference and Rutgers was #8. Ohio State got better as the year went on; Rutgers stats vs September cupcakes ended up not meaning much.

so this year they’re #12 after 4 games rather than #8. Yikes. At least they don’t have far to slide.

2021 was like that for most stats for both teams.

After 4 Games in 2021

Rutgers was #6 in the B1G in rush D
OSU was #13

When all was said and done, they swapped places, with the Bucks at #6 and the Knights at #13

In Pass defense OSU was #10 after 4 games but only climbed to 9 by season’s end. Rutgers though… they started out #1 in the league for September and they fell all the way to the basement by year’s end. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that before.

so why talk about last year? How do we know that their rankings will plummet again?

heh

This is best illustrated by observing what’s about to happen to their rushing defense numbers.

I watched their game against Iowa and the Hawkeye OL was pushing them around. It was only because Iowa’s execution was so inconsistent that they didn’t rush for much.

Iowa is the highest ranked rushing offense that Rutgers has faced.

that’s right. Hilariously historically horrible Hawkeyes are the best Rutgers has faced.

Rutgers Opponent Rush O Rank

Boston College: 128
Wagner: LOL
Temple: 121
Iowa: 116

The above is the ONLY reason that Rutgers is #1 in the B1G in rushing defense. They also happen to be #2 in the country.

The last time Ohio State faced an opponent that was #2 in the country at something it was Toledo’s pass defense.

Does anyone remember what happened to the Rockets?

The Buckeyes opened their season with five-consecutive home games, and they’ll round out the homestand with Homecoming weekend against Rutgers Saturday with a familiar face returning to Columbus.

 They've played every game this year at home. How is this "homecoming"?

:slappy:

Just sayin': I have to confess, back when I was a student at Ohio State I actually wondered about that too.

What are three areas of the game to keep an eye on as Ohio State hosts Rutgers for its homecoming game... despite not yet leaving home!

1) The Ohio State passing game vs. Rutgers’ secondary

2) Rutgers’ running game vs. Ohio State’s run defense

3) Which backups will have opportunities to shine in the second half?

Summary
For all the nice things we said about Rutgers, this game shouldn’t be close. The talent gap between the teams has been evident since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten, and if anything, the gap has widened in Ohio State’s favor. The results prove this as well, with Ohio State scoring at least 49 points in every game against Rutgers. While the Scarlet Knights have found some more points against the Buckeyes over the last few years, it’s still not even close to threatening the Buckeyes.

What makes Ohio State so tough is how quickly they can jump out onto teams. Last week the Buckeyes scored on their first four drives against Wisconsin, putting the Badgers in a hole that they didn’t have the ability to dig themselves out of. The offense of the Buckeyes is so hard to stop, since they can hurt you so many ways. Even if teams are able to slow down Ohio State, it’s hard to do so for the entire game. Just ask Notre Dame.

Though Rutgers does has some playmakers in the secondary, it’s not going to be nearly enough to slow down the arsenal of weapons Ohio State throws at you. Even if the Scarlet Knights are able to slow down the Buckeyes, then Rutgers has to find a way to put points on the board, which has been tough at times to do. There isn’t enough trick plays that Rutgers can throw at Ohio State to put the Buckeyes in danger. C.J. Stroud should have no problems throwing at least four touchdowns in an easy win.

LGHL Prediction: Ohio State 54, Rutgers 10
