'Runaway bride' inks deal with firm pitching movie
Officials who searched for her aren't amused

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- "Runaway bride" Jennifer Wilbanks made a deal with a company that is pitching a movie about her life to networks -- annoying officials who spent thousands of dollars searching for her.

ReganMedia, a New York multimedia company, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for a story in Thursday's papers it has acquired all media rights to the "life stories" of Wilbanks and her fiance, John Mason.

The company did not say whether any money had changed hands.

"I am looking forward to developing the scripted project with Wilbanks and Mason," company president Judith Regan said in a statement. "Theirs is an unexpected and compelling story of love and forgiveness that has certainly taught me a thing or two."

The 32-year-old bride-to-be disappeared from her home in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth on April 26, four days before her wedding in a ceremony with 600 guests and 28 attendants.

She took a bus to Las Vegas and then Albuquerque, New Mexico, and claimed she was abducted and sexually assaulted. She later recanted, saying she fled because of unspecified personal issues.

Wilbanks pleaded no contest earlier this month to making a false statement and was sentenced to two years of probation and 120 hours of community service. She also was ordered to continue mental health treatment and pay the sheriff's office $2,550. (Full story)

Duluth spent nearly $43,000 to search for her. Wilbanks has repaid $13,249.

"It's disturbing to me on a personal basis that she's willing to profit from this, but there's nothing I can do about it legally," said Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter, who pursued charges against Wilbanks.

runaway bride

I can see it already - the event of the year when she decides to marry again and Fox televises the ceremony.

The folks who sacrificed their time to search for her shoud be filing some lawsuits right about now.

As always, the real culprits are the folks who tune in to watch this trash.

The fact that this dumbass can command $500k for her story speaks a helluva lot more about the American public than it does for her stupid ass.

Apparently, the media thinks they can recoup $500 k and then some by getting Stupid America to tune in for this idiot.

That's a sad statement on our society...get lives, people!

$500k book/movie deal. It makes me want to burn a flag draped over her head.

Maybe I am too tired, but where did you see the $500K number?

How about we start a new collection to not buy her book and movie rights? I think we could get more than a half a million.

It was reported elsewhere as the estimated value of the deal (the link is to BBC America)

Now the couple have signed an exclusive deal with New York "superagent" Judith Regan. Media reports said the deal was worth $500,000 (£274,000), although this has not been confirmed by the firm.
And thump -- I don't believe 500K is enough to get those eyeballs recessed ..

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) ? Jennifer Wilbanks, who became known as the "runaway bride" after taking off just days before her lavish wedding in 2005, is suing her former fiance for $500,000.
Wilbanks and John Mason broke up for good in May, about a year after her excursion to Las Vegas and New Mexico made international headlines while hundreds of friends and family members searched for her back home in suburban Atlanta.

Mason has until Oct. 22 to respond to the lawsuit, filed last month in Gwinnett County's Superior Court. The suit, Wilbanks vs. JCM Consulting et al, was filed Sept. 13, according to court records.

In it, Wilbanks seeks $250,000 as her share of a home Mason purchased through the partnership with proceeds from $500,000 received for selling their story to an agent, plus $250,000 in punitive damages for allegedly abusing the power of attorney she granted for him to handle their financial affairs, according to Atlanta television station WAGA, which reported on the lawsuit Monday night.

She also seeks the return of personal property she claims he has kept.

Wilbanks disappeared four days before her April 30, 2005, wedding. Hundreds of police and volunteers searched for her for three days before she called Mason from Albuquerque, claiming to have been abducted and sexually assaulted.

She later recanted, saying she fled because of unspecified personal issues, and pleaded no contest to telling police a phony story.

She was sentenced to two years' probation and performed community service that included mowing the lawns of public buildings.
