Route 7 & Scenic Ohio River.

I went back to my hometown of Struthers for a 3 week vacation. The drive up was very intense since it was over the 4th of July weekend. Very hot and crowded interstates. The weather turned cooler as i crossed the Ohio river into Marietta. The vacation time was just great. Golfing with all my good friends at Mill Creek Park was a joy. There is a great new course that i played up in Columbiana called the "Firestone Links". it was just a beautiful course to play. It was great to be home again. Even got some to spend with Bob Stoops and Dick Creed, who is now back with the NFL officials up in the instant replay booth. He retired 2 years ago but the NFL called him back as a consultant.

When my time was up and i decided to come back to Jacksonville, i figured i was in no hurry and took a drive down thru interstate route 11 to East Liverpool and took the scenic ohio river along route 7. That was really a fantastic thing. Its really beautiful going thru small towns like Toronto, wellsville, Mingo Jct and the people there just seemed so pleasant and easy going. I could not get over all the riverbarge traffic flowing down on the Ohio and some of those power plants that i saw were simply breath taking.

I did not realize how big the OHio river was, and it was so vast. Going thru a small communitys like Hannibal and Sardis was something too. I noticed how alot of the houses were way up on the side of the valleys and not too far down on the banks of the river. I wondered why, until some of the locals told me that the Ohio River is noted for sever flooding in the spring. I stopped in a little town called Reno for a bite to eat and the people there just seemed to be very friendly.

When i saw the sign for interstate 77, at Marietta, i figured my scenic Ohio River tour had come to its end. It took me about 5 hours to make the trip but i did not care. Now reflecting back on what i had just accomplised, I realized it was well worth everybit of it and the next time i drive back up to Ohio from Florida i am going to do it again. I just gotta stop at Hannibal locks and watch how they put those huge barges thru the locks. All this just made me realize how beautiful the whole State of Ohio really is. What a great experience and vacation I had. I just had to share all of this with some of you BuckeyePlanet fans who live near all the placed i named. It was a great trip.

I had no idea there were so many River Rats here. :wink2:

I grew up in East Liverpool and now live in Poland (adjacent to Struthers). By the time I finished my years at tOSU, I bet I could drive Route 7 with my eyes closed. It's interesting to read the perspective of someone for whom it wasn't something they'd seen a million times before.
