Round on one end and crossed on the other

At the back entrance there's a hill that people use to pass out on. Many fun opportunities there. I watched German kids having a contest to see who could jump over the most unconsious drunks. People will put them in "unusual" poses. Too much fun. As strange as it might seem, Oktoberfest was my least favorite of the German fests. It's the only one I've ever been to where you can't just buy a beer and walk around.

edit: The scenery can be amazing though.

And on monday I went to the Hofbrauhaus rather than back out to Oktoberfest. Great beer hall, wonderful conversations with three young guys from French Switzerland, two women from Sweden, numerous locals and ended the day with a young man who works in Philly and went to Penn State, his girlfriend who graduated from Michigan and works in Chicago, and a young woman who was born in Hong Kong, went to Cal Berkeley and now works as a CPA in LA.

In reflection Oktoberfest is an interesting international event, but I enjoyed myself more in the Hofbrauhaus.

Loved the HofBrauhaus, interesting history to that place. Did you get a chance to head up to Dachau?

I taught CGSC NBC opens section at McGraw Kasserne in 84 & 85 and visited Dachau then.

One of the exhibits on display when you are entering is (at least was last time I was there) the internment papers that were for my mom's neighbor. She was born in '41 and grew up in Lux.

When we went over last, it was for a family wedding so we were all together. My mom had a lot of reservations about going to Dachau but ended up going with us. Suffice it to say, it was a kick in the teeth within the first 15 minutes of being there.

I know it was hard to do for her, but I don't think she regrets it. I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like over there during those times.

Everyone should have to see Dachau or the like in their lifetime so that we never let that kind of thing happen again.

Amen.

Two things struck me: 1) The meticulous manner in which each victim's name, address, age, occupation, relations were recorded. 2) The system map which showed how the units were organized to fan out, find, and filter all the untermenchen into the system. Dachau explained how it all worked better than anything I have seen or read before or since.

Garmisch, Bayern, Germany: Beautiful Buckeye Grove along a trail on one of the mountains here. Let's see, looking at the girth on these trees they've been around for a few years, so the first one must be for Chic Harley, then Gaylord Stinchcomb, Marty Karow, Wes Fesler, Lew Hinchman, Sid Gillman...
