Game Thread Rose Bowl, #8 tOSU vs #1 Oregon, Jan 1, 5:00 ET on ESPN

Few things…

1. I knew there was a big gap between these two teams. I really did. I didn’t expect this type of an ass beating but this is what hitting your stride looks like.

2. How about Fielding hitting two longer field goals? Good for him. I’m sure it’s not been easy for him the last few months.

3. Take a damn bow defense. 8 sacks, countless TFL, hardly any big plays, rotating a ton of players, and they’re hitting harder than maybe I’ve ever seen from an OSU defense. I thought the defensive front, Cody Simon, and the safeties were ruthless today.

4. We didn’t hear a peep from Burke all game. How cool is that considering how poorly the last game went. So glad to see him get this one back.

5. The offensive line with no sacks again vs this defensive line? What an incredible turnaround for this group. We stopped running stretch and look at how these backs get down hill.

6. I think we can shut up regarding Will Howard being able to throw downfield. He’s a very very good QB.

7. JJ Smith might be the best football player I’ve ever seen. He’s dominating as a true freshman. He looks like he’s an NFL Vet running around out there. I think he’s a top 10 WR in the NFL right now. He’s that good. We thought Marv was good but JJ is a different level than year 3 Marv.

Quick offensive points:

- Will Howard continues to do his thing. He's nowhere close to the best QB Day has ever had to work with, but when he's on, he's really on. As I said last week, if he continues to hit on the deep balls, the offense is nearly unstoppable. Just hoping he doesn't lock in too much on JJ Smith going forward.

- Quinshon finally got back into a nice rhythm today, ran hard and his vision today was solid. Trey is just an explosive play waiting to happen, having him healthy this late in the process is huge.

- Jeremiah Smith is the best WR I've ever seen at Ohio State, and maybe at the college level period. I could think of a guy like Larry Fitzgerald but even then, this kids a fucking freshman. Egbuka is a rightful 1st rounder and continues to block like a menace. Loved seeing Jerry Gee open up the game with a big play.

- O-Line was, once again put in great positions with the play calling. That being said, the pass blocking was absolutely phenomenal, regardless of the play call, Frye deserves his flowers here. Methinks Donovan Jackson made himself some money today. If this group can keep grinding off solid gains and add it a big play once a game on the ground, curtains.

I see what you did there!

I'm curious what the percentage of plays we ran pre-snap motion in the first half of the two playoff games (until they got out of hand) is versus what it was in the regular season.

It really feels like Day and Kelly have been sandbagging all season waiting to unleash this offensive beast in the playoffs. The fact that we started both games so fast and opened up big leads makes me hopeful they have a nice stock of tricks left up their sleeves.

Lanning had his usual smug expression right before the game, but it turned to extreme worry after the Buckeyes' second TD. The smugness did not return.

I don't believe Will Howard would have been a Heisman finalist if he had played well against Tcun, but he showed he should have been.

What a satisfying game.
I think the smug look was masking what he knew was coming. You don't punt on that first drive if you're confident in your chances. The second we called that first play to Jerry Gee, I knew we were gonna score points. The second he actually punted, I knew they weren't.

I get what you're saying, but that's unacceptable. Feel free to do that shit for 11 games, but that 12th game means more than those 11 games, combined, and maybe more than the entire post-season.
I don't think they were sandbagging, but if it ever comes out that they were in that game, umm... I don't know how to finish that sentence.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I totally agree. But, it definitely feels like we are seeing formations and plays that haven't been put on tape and have been specifically saved for the playoffs. That said there was still a Grand Canyon sized gap between the offensive game plan for games 1-11 and whatever the fuck we trotted out in The Game.

My rage at the outcome of that game is somewhat tempered by my utter befuddlement.
