Legendary Chicago Cubs player and broadcaster Ron Santo died Thursday night in Arizona. He was 70.

Friends of Santo's family said the North Side icon lapsed into a coma on Wednesday before dying Thursday. Santo died of complications from bladder cancer, WGN-AM 720 reported.

The former Cubs third baseman had overcome several debilitating injuries, including the amputation of both legs, to continue to work as a Cubs analyst on WGN, the team's flagship radio broadcast. He was expected to return for the 2011 season.

ya this guy was awesome...im not a cubs fan but i enjoy listening to any baseball on XM radio if there is nothing else on while driving home or whatever...and i listened in one day to a cubs game in the bottom of the 9th inning when carlos marmol blew a save to tie the game up, and this Santo guy was just so pissed off, ive never heard anything like that on the radio...it sounded like he was about to trash the radio booth and i was convinced he was drunk...very entertaining

Yeah, not drunk (he was a diabetic so he didn't drink), just the way he always was... I'd love hearing him call a game winning home run. You'd think he was having a coronary.

While I'm sad he never got to see (on earth) his life-long dream of being a HOF'er realized, I'm glad the Cubs honored him with his jersey retirement a few years ago...
