Austin Box: Oklahoma Sooners Linebacker Confirmed Dead by Medical Examiner

Today the Box family and Sooner nation, as well as the entire world of college football, will mourn the passing of Austin Box.

The details are very little at the moment but here is what is known at this time.

According to Enidnews.com, Box "was found unresponsive in El Reno today and taken to an Oklahoma City hospital."

The report indicated that he was flown to Mercy Hospital.

There were no further details given at that time.

Witness Tells Police Oklahoma Football Player Fatally Overdosed

NORMAN, Okla. -- Police were investigating whether drugs had a role in the death Thursday of Oklahoma senior linebacker Austin Box, and a witness told authorities he believed his friend had overdosed.

Authorities didn't immediately release an official cause of death, and Box's body was sent to the state Medical Examiner's office. Box was 22.

"We're all shocked and heartbroken," Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "Austin was a great young man, a great young man to coach, and a great teammate."

Stoops' defensive coordinator, Brent Venables, fought back tears and said he was "numb" while talking about Box during an evening news conference at the Switzer Center, adjacent to the Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

An autopsy on Oklahoma linebacker Austin Box revealed five separate painkillers and an anti-anxiety drug in his system at the time of his death.

Box died on May 19 at the age of 22 after collapsing at a friend's house. The report noted the presence of oxymorphone, morphine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone and oxycodone and the anti-anxiety drug alprazolam.

Wow, that'll do it. How did no one know he had gotten to this point? That doesn't happen overnight. Sad ending. :(
