  • I wasn't really much of a fan, but remembering this song takes me way back and rekindles some great memories.

The Leader of the Band - Dan Fogelberg

    An only child
    Alone and wild
    A cabinet makers son
    His hands were meant
    For different work
    And his heart was known
    To none --
    He left his home
    And went his lone
    And solitary way
    And he gave to me
    A gift I know I never
    Can repay

    A quiet man of music
    Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
    But his music wouldnt wait
    He earned his love
    Through discipline
    A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
    Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
    But his blood runs through
    My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
    To imitate the man
    Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.

    My brothers lives were
    Different
    For they heard another call
    One went to chicago
And the other to st. paul
    And Im in colorado
When Im not in some hotel
Living out this life Ive chose
And come to know so well.

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, pap, I dont think i
Said i love you near enough --

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
    But his blood runs through
    My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
    To imitate the man
    Im just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
    I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.

    Dan Fogelberg The Innocent Age

    Capture the moment
    Carry the day
    Stay with the chase
    As long as you may
    Follow the dreamer,
    The fool, and the sage
    Back to the days of
    The innocent age.
    Storybook endings
    Never appear
    They're just someone's way of
    Leading us here
    Waiting for wisdom
    To open the cage
We forged in the fires of
    The innocent age.
    Back at the start
    It was easy to see
    No one to own to
    Nowhere to be
    Deep in the heartlands
    A sad memory
    Calls to me.
    (Calls to me)
    Fretful horizons
    Worrisome skies
    Tearful misgivings
    Burning your eyes
    Yearnings unanswered
    Reckon the wage you
Pay to recapture the innocent age.
    Back at the start
    It was easy to see
    No one to own to
    Nowhere to be
    Deep in the heartlands

Well that's great! That sets a legal precedent. Does that mean I can sue Dan Fogelburg for making me into a pussy in the mid-70's. Is that possible, huh? Huh?! "Your honor, between him and James Taylor, I didn't get a blow job 'till I was 27 years old. I was in Colorado wearing hiking boots eating granola. I want some fucking money right now!"

    Longer

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif] Wow, I am sad as he wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever....RIP

    __________________________________________

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you
    Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
    Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you

I'll bring fire in the winters
You'll send showers in the springs
We'll fly through the falls and summers
    With love on our wings

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you
I'll be in love with you
    Repeat First Verse
I am in love with you

I was born by a river
    Rolling past a town
    Given no direction
Just told to keep my head down.
    As I took my position
    A man fired a gun
I was so steeped in tradition
    That I could not run.

I was raised by a river
    Weaned upon the sky
And in the mirror of the waters
I saw myself learn to cry.
As my tears hit the surface
I saw what had been done.
I gave feet to my freedom
    And I did run.

    Someday later
I saw the writing in the dust
It told me how I should travel
It told me who I was.
I ran far from the river
    Far as I could see
And as the sun hit my shoulders
    I felt it burning me.

How I longed for the waters
    As the fire raged
How I longed for the river
    As I aged.
I will die by a river
    As it rolls away
    Bury me in the nighttime
    Do not waste the day.

    High above the waters
That roll on to the sea.
All the angels in heaven will
    Laugh at me.
    They will laugh at me.

My life was naught but a river
    Rolling through my brain
    Made of so many teardrops
    Made of so much pain.
    Rest well Dan.

He seemed like a good dude overall. I hope some people will go get a PSA test and prostate exam now that the bad news is out. Warren Zevon was another one we lost because of a failure to check regularly, as was one of my brother's long time friends this last week. He did not have a good reason for not doing his check ups other than he put it off. Now he is dead.

I encourage you all to give blood. I do, and they do a free cholesterol and PSA screening every time I give.

I met him once and he seemed to be a really down-to-earth guy. Was one of my favorite musicians and I made sure that I got every back CD of his while I was in the US during the summer. Didn't know he had died.

The place where I give just added the free cholesterol measurement (total only) in the last couple of months. I'll suggest that they add the PSA test when I donate again next week.
