March 17, 2015
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman pitcher
Jacob Niggemeyer posted his first career win as the Ohio State baseball team defeated Rider, 6-2, Tuesday evening at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 11-5, while the Broncs fall to 3-10 in 2015.
Niggemeyer, a native of Powell, Ohio, pitched five innings and limited the Rider bats to two runs on four hits with one walk. He becomes the sixth different OSU pitcher to earn a victory this season.
Ohio State scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings before crossing the plate once in the fifth and seventh frames, respectively.
After the first two frames went scoreless, the Buckeyes crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the third by ways of small ball and some timey hitting.
Craig Nennig reached third base after an error by the Rider second baseman which occurred on a sac bunt attempt by
L Grant Davis. Nennig then scored on a fielder's choice by
Troy Montgomery.
Rider made it 2-1 in the following at bat after double play groundout by Greg Fazio. Justin Thomas, who walked to begin the game, scored from third base on the play. He got to third after and a roller to third base got underneath the glove of
Troy Kuhn. Niggemeyer maintained the lead when he induced a fly out to center.
In the bottom of the fourth, another error by the Broncs with the bases loaded allowed
Aaron Gretz to score. A walk by Rider starting pitcher Kurt Sowa to
Pat Porter then made it 4-1.
Ronnie Dawson made the play of the game in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded to help out Niggemeyer on the mound. The OSU sophomore made a spectacular over-the-shoulder grab in front of the left field wall to save three runs and limit the Broncs to a sac fly. Niggemeyer then got out of a second bases-loaded situation with a force out to second base on a groundball to keep it at 4-2.
Ohio State added a run in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. Nennig knocked his first career triple with two down to push
Ryan Leffel around home plate after he reached base on an error by the Rider catcher on a strikeout swinging. Davis claimed an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to score Leffel for the second time in the game.
The Ohio State bullpen did its job vs. the Broncs, throwing four scoreless innings to close the win.
Jake Post came in game in the top of the sixth and pitched three innings and allowed no runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Kyle Michalik threw the final inning and did not allow a hit or run in his fifth appearance.
