Manning Jr. charged with assault in L.A.

The man the Bears are counting on to solve their secondary woes has his own problems right now.

Ricky Manning Jr., whom the Bears signed to an offer sheet worth as much as $21 million Friday, was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday in Los Angeles and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a melee at a Denny's restaurant left a patron unconscious.

Manning, 25, was bailed out of jail, and Los Angeles Police Department detective Robert Lewis said late Sunday that a court date has not been set. What is set is that the Bears will owe Manning -- a cornerback signed to fill the void in the nickel package created by the retirement of Jerry Azumah -- a big chunk of money Friday if the Carolina Panthers decline to match the five-year contract, as expected.

The deal is front-loaded to discourage the Panthers, who have a tight salary-cap situation, from bringing Manning back. With a roster bonus of $5 million this season, his cap figure for 2006 will be between $6 million and $7 million.

According to Lewis, Manning was in a group that attacked a man in the restaurant after teasing him for working on a laptop computer.

"The group began by making comments that the victim looked like a geek or a nerd,'' Lewis said.

The victim asked the group to stop and then complained to a Denny's manager before someone in the group punched him in the face. He then was punched and kicked by multiple attackers until losing consciousness, Lewis said.

The group fled the restaurant, but the car Manning was in was pulled over by officers just blocks from the scene in Westwood Village near the campus of UCLA, where he played in college. According to Lewis, the victim, whom he would not identify, regained consciousness and identified Manning as one of his attackers. Manning has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon because the attack involved people kicking the victim with shoes on, Lewis said.

A source said Manning has said he was at the restaurant but had no part in the melee. It is not the first time Manning has been arrested. He was charged with assault after a bar fight in the same area five years ago today. His record has been clean since joining the NFL.

Authorities are hoping to make more arrests in the incident.

It's another headache for general manager Jerry Angelo to deal with while he sorts through the Thomas Jones situation. As reported in the Sun-Times on Saturday, Jones has stopped participating in the team's offseason program, and agent Drew Rosenhaus said his client is receptive to a trade.

Yet another one of Jerry Angelo's genius free agent moves. Guaranteed money too, at least 7 million of it, to a guy who went from the future of the Panthers secondary to the Panthers basically begging someone to take him. At least if he goes to jail, he will be well compensated

I think if he stays out of trouble it's a fair deal by Angelo.
I knew the guy was going to be an issue after seeing his offical website has a picture of him with snoop dog with a huge joint. Just seemed like he'd be baggage then sure enough, right afterwards.

Panthers pass on Manning

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

From wire reports

The Carolina Panthers declined to match the Chicago Bears' offer sheet to cornerback Ricky Manning Jr., one day after he was arrested on suspicion of assault following a fight at a restaurant near the UCLA campus.

A Panthers spokesman said the decision was unrelated to the arrest.

Manning, a 25-year-old restricted free agent, signed a five-year, $21 million offer sheet with the Bears last Friday after three seasons with Carolina.

Updated to make sure we cover the troubles of all football players from LA, no matter which college they attended. There's some confusion regarding whether or not Maurice Drew (or one-time Bruin Tyler Ebell) were arrested.

Chicago Bears cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. and two other former UCLA football players have been charged with assault for allegedly attacking a man in a Denny's restaurant April 23 near the Westwood campus, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced yesterday.

According to a release on the D.A.'s Web site, the former Bruins – Manning, Tyler Ebell and Maurice Drew, a running back selected by Jacksonville in the second round of this year's NFL draft – were arrested after the incident and released on $30,000 bond each.

That was news to Drew's agent, Adisa Bakari, who acknowledged his client was in the restaurant but said Drew was not involved in the incident, was never arrested and was never questioned by police.

“That (report) is not factual,” Bakari told the Union-Tribune last night. “Maurice was never arrested, not in his life. I don't understand. This is the first time we're having any communication with the cops. This is literally a guy (District Attorney Steve Cooley) trying to advance his career by targeting players, I'm going to be honest with you.

“They took the three notable guys in this whole situation to make a case. They sensationalized it. And when it comes out, the guys who actually did the assault – they didn't even go to UCLA, they didn't play football there. They were local guys that people knew.”

Bakari acknowledged his client was in the restaurant, but said Drew arrived before Manning and left before Manning.

“This is just a lie,” Bakari said. “They were not out together. They did not come together or leave together. Maurice drove his own car. He was already there before Ricky; he had ordered his food. I don't really understand what this propaganda is all about.”

A check of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department records shows no record of Drew or Ebell being arrested or processed. It does show Manning as having been arrested.
Spokespersons for the District Attorney's Office and the L.A. Police Department acknowledged it would be unusual for someone to have been arrested or processed yet fail to show up in records on the Sheriff's Department's Web site.

I think they should line those thugs up in a row and let the "nerd" smash each of them in the fucking face with a closed laptop.

This is a reason I'm glad Ohio now has a concealed carry law. Imagine...you are sitting eating your meal at Denny's...a bunch of thugs come over and start shit with you just to impress their buddy beside them....they start kicking and punching you in the face....you fear for your life....you then blow their fucking internal organs all over the Denny's window....they then lay there thinking...."man, maybe I should have just kept my fucking mouth shut."
