Rick Ankiel back in the majors...

Report: Cardinals' Ankiel linked to human growth hormone

Friday, September 7, 2007 3:33 AM

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel, baseball's feel-good story of the season, received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone from a Florida pharmacy that was part of a national illegal prescription drug-distribution operation, the New York Daily News has learned.

Ankiel, who flamed out mentally and physically as a pitcher earlier this decade, only to return to the majors as a slugging outfielder last month, has evoked comparisons this season to Roy Hobbs and Babe Ruth. He hit two home runs, a double and had seven RBI yesterday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Busch Stadium, giving him nine home runs in 81 at-bats since his remarkable major league comeback began Aug. 10.

It was purchased while he was still a pitcher so obliviously, it didn't help him too much. Maybe that's where he got the extra strength to throw all those pitches to the backstop.

He's much more likely to be using it now since his career depends on it. Without a test for it, he's got no worries. Much like Gary Matthews Jr., this will go away in no time.

which is why I think if he just says yes, that's me and sorry, people will forgive him probably.

I don't think it's a big deal FWIW

Now a report is coming out that Troy Glaus bought stuff to. I was just on espn but I haven;t found it on any websites yet.

The issue with Ankiel though, for the timeline in question, is that he wasn't even playing baseball then. He was recovering from Tommy John surgery. His surgery was in July 2003, and he didn't play organized baseball again until September 2004. I don't understand all the facts of these investigations/sting operations that are going on right now, so I don't know if his "prescription" was on the up-and-up through a real physician or what, but last time I checked in the USA, purchasing mail-order drugs for which you hold a prescription is legal. Also, in 2004, HGH wasn't a banned substance.

So, I guess I just don't see the story in an athlete taking a non-banned supplement/substance, even if it was a performance enhancer, when he's holding a prescription and recovering from surgery.

There could easily be more to this story, for all I know Poo-holes and Ankiel might be injecting the nuclear-grade, German-made, old fashioned anabolic crap three times a day, who knows ... but for what information is out so far, I don't see where Ankiel did anything wrong. ... Well, I don't see where he did anything punishable by MLB's standards. That'd be hypocritical.

Congrats to Rick Ankiel, for single-handedly blowing the game for the Cardinals tonight by committing two errors in right field during an inning in which the Reds scored 6 runs.

Rick Ankiel makes Manny look like a freakin' gold glover.

The dude goes from not being able throw a ball over the plate to not being able to catch routine fly balls. :slappy: :slappy:
