and NO, you DO NOT get it. Your not from either state, you have no ties to either state. Quite simply put, your an outsider trying to blend in, it ain't gonna happen.

Go sing Country Road and hunt some rabbits you jackass.
To be fair-- you don't have to be from either state to get it. You don't even have to be from the midwest.

You just have to sit down, and read an article about Woody Hayes or Bo. You have to watch an old version of The Game. You have to look at Cooper's record, and look at the talent he had. You have to ask a 9-year old kid in that state up north, "why do you hate Ohio State?" and you will see it in that kid's eyes. Do the same thing in Ohio.

You have to smell the autumn air, 3rd week of november. Then realize that for over a century, The Game has been played at this time of the year. People were smelling the same autumn smells and getting ready for the same thing, every damn year.

Then look at the records of each program and realize that both programs are two of the most successful programs in the history of college football, one of the oldest sports this country has. Then realize that these two states have had a war with each other.

Then think a little bit about what football really is. Maybe think about this quote from Woody:
"Football represents and embodies everything that's great about this country, because the United States of America is built on winners, not losers or people who didn't bother to play."
Football in America is about winning. It's about 2-a-days, it's about the team, it's about comraderie and hard-as-hell workouts preparing you to get punched in the face and kicked in the bottom of the pile, over, and over, and over. It's about a 280 pound offensive lineman lining up in the 4th quarter, exhausted as hell, and realizing that he's facing one of the deepest defensive lines in the country. He's lined up against a guy who is just as strong, and just as fast, as he is, only he's had way more rest. Football is about lining up and then sucking it up and driving this guy backwards if you have to kill yourself doing it.

Football is in so many ways an embodiment of what America is. Rich Rod, your school is historically one of the best in the country. So is ours.
We have upset each other countless times.
The midwest LIVES football. We BREATHE it. You smell autumn? You smell the leaves? That is the smell of football, and that's the smell of The Game. Two of the most successful schools in the country, bordering each other, constant upsets, in the greatest sport this country has. It's not that hard to get it.

Re:biggrin:oes Rich Rod understand the OSU/Mich rivalry? - 25 mins. ago ( #23 )
Tell me why there were/are OSU stickers on the tackling dummies at Michigan? And yes, every game is important. Don't take statements out of context. RR also said that this was going to be a special week in what they do to prepare. It is the "fans" that hate RR that are listening to his every move and completely over-analyzing it.

I'm not saying RR is the real deal for Michigan just yet, but I am willing to give him 2-3 full recruiting classes to prove himself. I read somewhere that from 2005 to 2007, Carr recruiting 28 defensive players. Of the 28, 17 were kicked off the team before RR got into town. I'm not placing blame on Carr but, seriously, the defense left the University of Michigan in 2006/2007. Give the guy another year.

I love scUM fans, they're an amusing bunch.

Serious question. Who thinks he could beat 2-10-1 trying to run the spread option in november weather? With 185 pound midget back 8 of a 3-3-5?

Well you'd like to think he could do worse but when you think about it 2 wins in 13 years is probably the minimum that can happen as long as you put 11 guys on the field or unless he keeps the talent level to the depths of Indiana or Northwestern and gets nearly a decade and half to keep adding to the futility.

Look at the last 13 games against any B10 team and see how often its worse than 2-10-1. Not very many and none against teams that are in our weight class. Coop was unfuckingbelievable.

Indiana 13-0
Minny 12-1
Northwestern 12-1
Iowa 11-2
M*ch*gan State 11-2
Purdue 10-3
Illinois 10-3
Wisconsin 8-4-1
Penn State 8-5
scUM 8-5

Good points, and well said on the bold.

just like the rivalry, Dick shows he "gets" defense too:

Cols Disp said:
"We just hoped they would grow up fast or be ready to handle things quicker," Rodriguez said. "At times they have, but at other times we haven't. After the season, if there's some moves we need to make from an offensive guy to put him on defense to get us some personnel help over there, we'll do that."

But Rodriguez is counting on players who are still in high school for most of the future improvement.

"We've got to make our mark in the next couple signing classes. This past year's signing class I think helped a little bit. The next couple are critical for us, particularly addressing our defensive needs."

So... coming out of the spring it didn't occur to you that you had signifigant and serious depth issues (to say nothing of talent) on the defensive side of the ball? After David fuckin Cone gashed the D? Now you're going to take a WR and make him a DB?

And the last part... well.. that's pure classic.

It'll take Jwins expertise in this area to better establish it, but a quick glance at the old offer list sure doesn't show much attempting to address your defensivee needs. Well... unless you plan on putting half of you 27 5'10 175 pound guys over on the defense. yeah.. good luck with that.

We've got to make our mark in the next couple signing classes.

Just to take the DL as an example, and given that recruiting rankings are not the last word, here are the rankings within their position for their last 5 DL classes:

2005: 5, 11, 15, 33, 46
2006: 4, 22, 40, 58
2007: 8
2008: 12
2009: 6, 8, 15

And next year's class, the one that will help them "make their mark":
38, 63, 71, 83

And there are currently ZERO linebackers in next year's class that already numbers 20. And of the nine kids offered at the position seven have committed elsewhere.

I don't know much about coaching football at any level, but isn't it odd that Rodriguez puts so much public emphasis on recruiting? Not that the two situations can ever be compared, but even in the darkest days of 2004 when the cupboards were the barest they've been in the Tressel era, did the man ever say in a press conference "Oh boy we REALLY need these 2005 and 2006 classes to be hum-dingers otherwise we're in some [censored]!!"

First, if you're a coach at the collegiate level, aren't you supposed to... you know, coach up the talent you have?

Second, if you played for a coach that talked about needing better talent all the time, would you have any confidence left in your abilities?

Saw this posted in Pat Forde's latest column on ESPN ... for all the grief Cooper gets, the Big Ten was absolutely stacked, top-to-bottom, in the 90s. Contrast the conference's post season records during Cooper's tenure vs the conference of welterweights now.

Big Ten schools other than Ohio State in BCS bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta) during the John Cooper era in Columbus (1988-2000) -- 9-5.

Big Ten schools other than Ohio State in BCS bowls during Tressel era -- 1-7.

Big Ten schools other than Ohio State in all bowl games during Cooper era -- 33-26.

Big Ten schools other than Ohio State in all bowl games during Tressel era -- 18-30.

No argument from me on that point. That was back when you could honestly make a case for the B10 being the best conference year in and year out.

1995 was perhaps the height of that...seemed like almost every team was very skilled and had at least 5-8 all-conference worthy players that year.
