HECKLERS SEND ROD OFF TO MICHIGAN
As former Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez bolted Morgantown for Ann Arbor, several folks showed up at the airport to give him a proper sendoff.
Rodriguez was heckled as he boarded a plane for Michigan and his new job.
And the general mood here in West Virginia is "good riddance." Last year, we all felt that Rod's dalliance with the folks at Alabama resulted in a long-term commitment to staying in Morgantown.
We thought that because, well, he said so.
This time around, the general reaction to the news that he had met with Michigan representatives was "here we go again." And most hard-core WVU fans (yours truly included) opted to detach from him emotionally at that instant.
So now we learn again that there really is no loyalty. Even those who have the best reasons to be loyal all too often aren't. Rodriguez was, in the end, no different that Nick Saban or Bobby Petrino or any other coach who says one thing, and does another.
There's also a belief that the unlikely loss to Pitt in the regular-season finale, which robbed the program of a berth in the BCS championship, destroyed Rodriguez's confidence. As we hear it, he feared that the window had closed, and that the best days were behind him.
He also was starting to privately point fingers, we're told, blaming the school for not giving him what he needed to win.
Um, Rich? Did the school tell him to all of a sudden start throwing the ball to the end zone from the Pitt 20 with two minutes to play and down by only six?
They could have won that game. They should have won that game. They would have won that game, if Rodriguez hadn't cracked under like Kramer being interrogated by the cops. Rodriguez apparently realized in the wake of that bitter defeat that he'd never be able to put it behind him, to the point where he decided that he needed a fresh start.
And don't rule out the role of his agent in the process. As we understand it, the agent decided a year ago that it was time for Rod to leave. After Rod opted to stay, it could be that the agent spent the next 12 months pushing buttons and pulling strings, all in the hopes of setting up a phony impasse between the coach and the university.

Although I don't agree with how Rod left... WVU fan- heckling at the airport? :shake:

Say what??? Dee McCann, Pacman Jones, Chris Henry, Rasheed Marshall. To name a couple. Oh, and I bet some guys named White and Slaton make it somehow to the NFL.

.......and that's about all I can think of. How long has he been there? 7 years? And that is what you call producing NFL talent? Of the hundreds of players that have rolled through Morgantown in the last 7 years and those are the names that come to mind? Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while but those guys are far from elite and as far from the classy bunch as you can find.

and to add my two cents: his wife is really tough to look at for more than 3 seconds at a time.

Still a far cry from the claim that WVU produced ZERO picks in the NFL draft, isn't it? And since "classy" wasn't part of the absurd claim, who cares?

Seven years means only three recruiting classes that rolled all the way through to be draft eligible, BTW. Four more to go.

:smash:

I'd rather have the talent from Kent State currently in the NFL:

Starters/Stars:
Josh Cribbs, WR, Cleveland
Abram Elam, S, NY Jets
Antonio Gates, TE, San Diego
James Harrison, LB, Pittsburgh

Contributors:
Daniel Muir, DT, Green Bay
Usama Young, CB, New Orleans

In a time where loyalty is rare, we should really take a minute to really appreciate James Patrick Tressel.
Yeah, 'cause there are all kinds of openings around the country more attractive than the Ohio State job. "Hi, Coach Tressel, this is Ed Pastilong, we really like what you've done in Columbus, and we recently had a job open up - " *click*

Look, not knocking Tressel, but the fact that he isn't likely to leave Columbus has less to do with loyalty than it does with the fact that once you get to certain programs, there aren't any more steps up.

While I appreciate your opinion of tOSU, there is this little league called the NFL...

...and not long ago there was this NFL team close to his hometown....that just so happened to contact him...

Pro level. (And he has reportedly turned down those overtures before, despite a STRONG affection for the Browns).

Edit Buckin 'A' got there first.

that's a BIG stretch... the point, with guys like RR, is that more than anything, it's the money that talks because there's always a money-step up no matter where you are. and guys like that will take the carrot especially if they're doing a job where they are because that's what success smells like to them. why? because to guys like that it's just business. their salary is what gives them a sense of fulfilment.

mind you, i'm not saying people shouldn't chase higher salaries. i'm just saying we need to call it what it is. hypothetically, do you think RR would have made the move if it was a wash financialy? i don't.
