Register.com DNS problems

Register.com seems to be having some service/DNS problems. This shouldn't affect anyone already seeing this message, as you'd have the DNS cached, but it may well be that the site is appearing down to those who haven't visited it recently.

It's not a problem with us or our server, but wanted to post something about it, and let everyone know it's being investigated. Hopefully this is just a temporary outage for them and won't have more of a footprint than it already does.

Apparently this may have something to do with the Conflicker virus.

Again, our server and host is fine, it's Register.com that's having problems. Hopefully they're quickly resolved, because while DNS is down, our ability to see BP through the domain name will only continue while we have it cached in our systems.

Confirmed it's a problem with the registrar, one that's impacted basically all of their sites and services (scary, that represents a huge pool). They're actively working on it, and expect to be back online in short order.

Of course, it's not lost on me that the people who can't see BP because of the problem won't be helped at all by this message, but if any of you who do see this later lose the ability to connect for a while, at least you'll know why. :)

I'm just happy it's not a server problem (not that you can tell)!

Same issue over the past hour or so? I couldn't pull up BuckeyePlanet, so figured I'd try Register.com, and that was a no-go too.

Time to switch registrars to Network Solutions, I think!

Sounds like it. I don't even remember why I started using register.com. In the 90s, all I used was Network Solutions/Internic.

Confirmed that there were indeed more DDoS attacks on Register.com yesterday, which would have explaned the behavior Dryden saw. I've seen a couple problems today (same reason), and am going to start trying to figure out who else we can use at least for DNS, perhaps as a registrar entirely. I lose enough sleep over our (past, hopefully) server problems, I don't need Register.com adding to it.

The problem is that your registrar holds the information that points to your DNS servers, regardless whether those are on the network of the registrar or no. As long as register.com is having an issue, DNS will be out for BP no matter where your local DNS data is on record.

Contact Network Solutions and arrange a transfer. NSI is the original registrar awarded the contract for domain name registrations by the NSF. NSI/VeriSign owns the authoritative root name server for all .com, .net, .cc, and .tv domains, which is well over 50 million registrations. In fact, register.com, as well as all the other ICANN accredited registrars, have to go through NSI/VeriSign to even sell domain names.

NSI is not the cheapest, but they are the oldest, biggest, fastest, and best in the field. They are the source. At least with NSI, if their root servers ever went down, then the World Wide Web as we know it would effectively stop working completely, so the fact that nobody could get to BP would be a minor concern, since they couldn't get anywhere else in the world either.
