REFUTED: Wishbone for Fiesta Bowl?!

The satanic soulless freight train that is Ohio St
  • I just got an e-mail from a good friend whose ex-classmate is on the staff. He claims that JT is going to unveil a hybrid of the wishbone/flexbone in the Fiesta Bowl, using Haw as the fullback/upback and Pittman and Wells as tailbacks/pitchbacks. The timing of this e-mail is a little spooky, seeing as a couple of BP members including myself were just commenting on the wishbone/flexbone in the Poinsetta Bowl thread, and I don't think my fiend is a member here (not that I know of, anyway).

Notre Dame played Navy (which runs the flex exclusively) this year, and limited Navy to 238 yards rushing that game, but Navy still averaged over 4 ypc...Navy never had the ball much as Notre Dame controlled the ball against Navy's mediocre defense, else Navy might scored a lot more. Under normal circumstances I'd totally blow this off, but I recall that Tressel did run a variation of the old Houston Veer option at Youngstown State during the early '90s (in '91 he had two 1,000 backs), so maybe this thing might have some legs (pun intended). If so, this could something to see...

Wow, that would be interesting. I find it hard to believe since it would require taking some of our more powerful chess pieces off the field ... namely receivers (Holms, Ginn, Gonzo, etc.) I guess it would be a big surprise for ND. Wonder how well they adjust on the defensive side of the ball?

Well, they could put Ginn in at one of the pitchbacks (most likely in place of Wells), giving them more speed and a throwing threat since Ginn played QB in high school and in the Alamo Bowl (and yeah, one frickin' snap this year ). You still have Holmes and Gonzo as wideouts.

interesting mili. as conservative as hes known for being he runs a lot of different formations and has shown at times to be innovative (shot ginn) and old school. that being said it wouldnt suprise me.

ps are you going to make a crazy bet like you wont post here for a month if they dont run this hybrid you speak of? :wink2:

Mili, if another bet is made like that, state '4 weeks' rather than a month. Then if you choose to take each week at a different time, it's valid. :wink2:

I don't think we need anything new in this game to move the ball. Run the same offense we've ran the second half of the season. No surprises needed. Notre Dame's defense just doesn't match-up with us at all. We really should be able to move the ball well.

I wouldn't put it past JT... as he has been fairly innovative in big games (1st option play of the year to win The Game 02, fake FG run in NC game, shotginn, etc)...

It would scare the crap out of that defense... and we may finally see the Ginn to Smith pass that has been thrown around for fun on here. It would be a fun wrinkle, but I'm not sure it's a good idea.

I saw Navy running the 'bone offense in the bowl game. They were great at it. I think they had like 4 td's out of it in that game. But they have also been using it all year, OSU has not.

But we don't know anything. We could've been practicing the 'bone in all year, but just haven't used it yet. It sounds stupid, but its very possible.
