Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

Dusty on why he won't bat Bruce clean up:

?No, because I want to break up them lefties,? Baker said. ?Plus, Jay?s hitting well and hitting home runs, but he?s still got improve on driving in runs himself.?

Is any of that really shocking at this point? He has used that "break up the lefties" thing for years. Of course that ignores the simple fact Votto and Bruce hit lefties about as well as and at times better than righties. Dusty has an unnatural fear of LOOGY's. His master plan is to have them face Phillips and therefore making the game an instant win. We all know a team automatically has to forfeit if they allow a left handed reliever face a right handed batter, no matter how shitty the right handed batter.

Good thing this team got rid of Josh Hamilton. Dusty's head would explode if he was in the lineup. I guess Votto would have to move to the 2 spot and Bruce to the 6 spot with Hamilton batting cleanup.

I should be astounded by this stupidity, but I'm not.

  • Bruce already leads the team in RBIs.
  • Bruce and Votto hit LHPs better than most of the right-handed batters on this team.
  • The best way to increase the likelihood of Bruce driving in baserunners is to bat him directly behind players who stand a chance of becoming one.
  • How many RBI chances have been denied to Bruce because the #4 batter stranded Votto and ended the inning?
  • How many RBI chances have been denied to Bruce after Votto reached base and the #4 batter grounded into a double play to erase the baserunner?
  • He is setting up the lineup to negate a potential LOOGY late in the game? What about the opportunity cost during the other three times through the order that come before that during each game?
  • He is setting up the lineup to negate the possibility of facing lefthanded relievers, while the two best lefthanded relievers in the entire motherfucking league are in the Reds' own bullpen. Who the fuck do these other teams have that Dusty is so afraid of? They're all going to war with leftovers when it comes to LHPs.

Brandon Phillips is batting .150 against lefties this season. Scott Rolen is batting .160, and we're all the way up to .261 for Ryan Ludwick. Considering Dusty's stance, it shouldn't be at all surprising that Jay Bruce is hitting lefties better than all of them, at .269, despite the fact that he has more ABs.

Also, Joey Votto is hitting lefties at .286. So you definitely absolutely don't want two left handed hitters back to back in the lineup because that would mean that you have your two best hitters vs lefties back to back in the lineup.

I saw somebody on RedsZone say that a reason for not batting them back-to-back is that with only two lefties in the lineup, if you do that you have seven righties in a row.

In other words, you gotta break up the lefties because you gotta break up the righties.

Nevermind that by batting the lefties #3 and #5 in the order, you still have six right-handed batters in a row anyway. :smash:

I'm convinced you could give Dusty a team with Mantle, Rose, Chipper Jones, Eddie Murray and Roberto Alomar, and he'd insist that you have to break up the switch hitters because of some retarded ancient baseball voodoo.

Or he'd sit them on the bench.

Well, he is not afraid of good left handed relievers. Chapman and Marshall can get out right handers. He is afraid of the Jesse Orosco's of the world (I know he is retired, but he was the ultimate LOOGY). You know, the guys that hardly ever pitch and their only job is to get out left handers. There is maybe 20 of so of them in the league. I suppose he figures if he negates those guys it cancels out all those other at bats where he put a fucktard that can't hit behind one of the highest OBP players in the league.
