I asked Dusty Baker if with Zack Cozart out, the Reds consider playing Todd Frazier at shortstop. I should say I asked him again.
“No,” Baker said. “What makes you keep asking me that question?”
Me: “He came up as a shortstop.”
Baker: “So what? Everybody came up as a shortstop.”
Me: “He actually played it in the minors.”
Baker: “They didn’t move him off short for nothing. Am I right? If he was as shortstop, he’d still be there. They moved him to first, they moved him right, they moved him to left. They were looking for a position for him. You just don’t throw anybody at shortstop. That’s probably the toughest, most-athletic position on the field.”
I don’t think Frazier would win a Gold Glove at shortstop, but I think he’d make the routine plays. He played 72 games there in the minors. He was moved because Cozart is better.
But with Cozart out, the Reds are starting Wilson Valdez tonight. Valdez is hitting .091 since August 1. His last extra base hit was July 5. I think you have to weigh what Valdez brings defensively against what Frazier would add offensively.

The Me is John Fay
