Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

The "C" stands for "derp"

Well, they turned around the road trip with 3 straight wins. 9 games over at the break is better than I expected. While this team is very flawed, they are not in a bad position going in the second half (where on paper it's much easier than the first).

I still think the Cards will be the team to beat. I don't think Pittsburgh will fall apart, and will be a over .500 team (finally), but not the favorite. The Reds have a shot, but there really needs to be more emphasis on fundamentals. I don't really have much hope in that, but even then this team could make a run at the playoffs if the pitching + Votto stays healthy.

So, I'm reading that the Reds are in the conversation for Justin Upton. Does anyone think he'd be an upgrade over what we have here? I do.

If we could package Stubbs and maybe a pitcher that we have too many of like Arredondo, LeCure and Masset, then I'd say pull the trigger right now. We'd be taking on a lot more payroll but the kid is still only 24. Upton, Bruce and Heisey for the moment until Hamilton get to the bigs is more than serviceable in my opinion. If not that combo, Upton in center with Ludwick/Heisey and Bruce sounds good also.

I really think the rotation is fine and as long as Marshall can revert back to his beginning of the season form, we're fine in the bullpen. A couple of bats and guys that can get on base is holding this team back.Well, that, and the toothpick eating fucker in the dugout.

Upton would obviously be a huge improvement.

I'll believe Walt does something like that when I see it. Meantime I'm going to gird my loins for the "Cardinals are in town" shot to the pills that's coming our way later tonight.

Of course Upton would be an upgrade over what he have in LF, but the Reds would almost certainly have to give up Hamilton in order to get Upton. If we somehow were to keep Hamilton, Upton would then require a complete gutting of our system as Corcino, Cingrani, Gregorious, Lotzkar, Joseph and others would probably have to be in the deal. That might not even get the job done.

It's not worth gutting our system, IMO to get a guy who, while he would be an upgrade, is as inconsistent as Upton is. Plus, Upton has a fairly large contract, which could hinder the club's ability to sign some of their arbitration eligible players over the next few years.

If it were me I would use some of our prospects to get a high OBP leadoff hitter like Dexter Fowler or Ben Revere. Fowler would be my preference and would require the Reds to depart with far fewer prospects than would a deal involving Upton.
