I'm hoping to see Billy Bray back up pretty soon. He's been throwing well since coming back from injury and that LH out of the bullpen looks a lot better than Weathers/Coffey.
I'll take an uninjured Bray, or Belisle, or Shearn, or McBeth, or anyone that can throw a baseball over home plate ... I don't really care who the hell it is, whether they throw lefty, righty, or fire the balls out of their ass, as long as it isn't Todd Coffey sprinting out to the hill like a fucking idiot any longer. He's out of chances, in my book. Trailing a game 5-1 is not any great mountain to climb when you have sluggers like the Reds and you're working against the Pittsburgh bullpen. 9-1 is a different story entirely. Coffey should carry a white fucking flag with him when he runs to the mound.
We give up! We cannot win this game, so here's Coffey. Enjoy the meatballs down broadway, courtesy of the Reds!
Now, personally, I don't have a huge problem with Weathers in the pen. He's a rubber-armed veteran that can make 70 appearances a year, has closing experience and is coming off a 30S season. Even if you don't have confidence in him in the tight ballgames, he's a decent insurance policy if you need to spell Cordero for a stretch, and he'll pitch the full inning when you call him.
Sure, Stormy Weathers is no Joba Chamberlain, but at least he's no Todd Coffey either.
The Reds just gave up 9 runs to the Pirates in a laugher yesterday, which ballooned their team ERA ... all the way up to 3.54.
Some trivia:
When was the last time the Reds had a pitching staff with a team ERA under 4.00? 1999.
When was the last time the Reds had a pitching staff with a team ERA under 3.75? 1992.
How about runs/game allowed for the season (gotta figure in EE's and Votto's errors, I guess)? 3.92
Last time the Reds had a pitching staff with a R/G avg under 4? Also 1992.
Coffey's given up nearly 15% of all the runs the
entire team has allowed. He's only 1 run shy of equaling the RA of Affeldt, Burton, Cordero, Lincoln, Merker, and Weathers
combined.
Addition by subtraction. DFA Coffey.
