Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

I took a handful of tranqulizers and passed out for about 6 hours, I'm fine now. :wink2:

Isn't there a way to just forfeit so no one important gets hurt instead of actually playing a game with those 3 stiffs all starting?

I have my emergency "its just the sorry ass Reds don't get upset" mental shut off switch for situations like today so my head doesn't actually explode. They have sucked balls for a long time and continue to suck balls, I just have to remind myself not to care or get my hopes up.

Some ideas for getting better:

Todd Coffey and Juan Castro are not legit MLB players, they need to go away when AG and MB come back.

Freel and Hopper are the same player make one go away. I don't expect any return of note.

Hatteberg has value and needs to be traded for something we need. JL can be the LH hitter off the bench and emergency catcher when Ross comes back. Keppinger is your back up 1B.

We need some RH thump off the bench and EE to start playing. There is a gaping hole behind him at 3B in the organization. Another good bullpen arm wouldn't hurt. Catcher can always use a good talent uprgrade.

All in all, I still say they are a .500 team. They'll win some they shouldn't and lose the same way but all in all they will lose as often as they win.

So counting from your post, If the reds got 9 new ballplayers they could have a team?

3 new bench players and 1 new reliever would make them better than they are right now. Seriously if WK could package Hatte, Freel/Hopper and a prospect for a legit RH hitter we could be in business.

It would also be nice if maybe the teams translator got the word to EE that the season has started.

Couple things to hit on you said Jax...

The 3B depth is on its way up...It will be ready by middle of next season...Either Frazier, Franscisco, or Waring...

I didn't know it was that hard to find some pop from the right side to be a bench player...I mean Javy can provide some from the left side, and he wouldn't even make 75% of teams in the majors...You have to figure there is soemone we could pickup that provides more pop than Castro, Freel and Hopper combined...

I like Hopper as a guy that make things happen, and play decent outfield, and he doesn't break down as much as Freel...I would be all for getting rid of Freel, Hatte, Castro, and Coffey and finding a right hand hitter to replace them...Ag comes back and pushes Castro off the team and Kepp plays SS when a righty is on the mound and first when a lefty is on the mound or they play Kepp at 3rd a little and Gonzo at SS...

Either way that beats having two lefties platooning at first, a guy at 3rd not being pushed by anyone, and a back SS that just sucks...

I havent posted in a few days, afraid to explode on everyone. Its surprisingly calm considering the sweep by the worst frickin team in baseball!

I like some of the package ideas I've seen from some of you. The lineup with Castro, Freel, Hopper almost made me puke today. Its not terribly awful to have Freel and Hopper at the top of the lineup if 3-6 are hitting because they actually set the table some but when we've got zero pop in the lineup they just make your stomach churn.

Anyway we can package EE, Freel, Coffey and a prospect for Bill Hall? Two birds with one gigantic stone there if it could workout. Too bad we have the only dumbass GM that might fall for that one!

I'm hoping to see Billy Bray back up pretty soon. He's been throwing well since coming back from injury and that LH out of the bullpen looks a lot better than Weathers/Coffey. I also am looking forward to Bruce coming up within the next month or so, seems like he's the only one within earshot that can actually hit for any kind of power.

Even though Cueto and Volquez didnt have their best stuff this week I am really looking forward to the rest of their seasons. The weather in shitsburg was pure crap, cold and rainy, and those Dominican arms are going to love the humidity in Cincy as the summer comes in. I am not worried about Bronson like some are, he is what he is. He'll give us the rare gem but usually 3 ER's in about 7 innings or so is his MO. Once again no run support though. I cant wait until Dunns bat heats up and the scoreboard gets pelted from time to time.

Hope we get the next series.

A couple of guys to keep an eye on....

I have been paying more attention to the affiliates this season to see who might be able to come up to the bigs and push some of the old tired Reds out of the roster and I've been impressed with a few guys so far. I know its early but some of these guys are really showing up and some are in areas of need.

C Alvin Colina: We picked him up last season off waivers from the Rockies and he's lit it up with us so far. He appears to be excellent behind the plate and thus far this season his offensive stat line has been great. His career hitting is only average but maybe he's getting that "new Reds syndrome" and finding his niche. Most impressively he's 7 for 9 with runners on base this season and 6 for 6 with RISP. Something we could definitely use on the big roster.

P Homer Bailey: Everyone knows who he is and he appears to be getting his control down. Fewer walks, few ER's, <1.0 in WHiP. Should be a mid season addition for sure.

P Justin Lehr: Where'd this guy come from? He' been near unhittable thus far this season. 0.60 ERA and <.50 WHiP in 15+ innings! Its AAA yes but those two games were against the Red Sox and Yankees clubs, not exactly without Major League talent. Justin has been around for a little while mostly pitching in relief with the Brewers and Mariners. Looks like the Reds think he's a better starter than reliever. All-Star last season in PCL and pitched lights out in the Mexican league this offseason. If he keeps this up he may be pushing for a call up sooner rather than later also.

OF Jay Bruce: He only needs to be called up and the rest will be history.

OF Drew Anderson: He's been killing the ball since the start of spring ball. He can run, plays excellent defense and thus far is producing at the plate. It will be hard for him to make the roster as long as Griffey is there and Bruce hasnt been called up yet. We just have too many outfielders for him to make the roster this season. Maybe next year or if injury or trade happens.

P's Shearn, McBeth and Roenicke could also help us this season. Shearn is older but he has experience. Most of the guys on this list here are under 25-26 years old. The cupboard isnt bare, which is a real relief considering recent history. If the GM could package the right people and make some quality moves we could be in definite business.

I havent gotten a chance to look at many guys below the AAA level so if you guys have an eye on some up and comers mention them here so I can check them out too.

Pirates 9 Reds 1
For Reds, weekend best swept under rug

The Reds' Brandon Phillips rolls into Pirates shortstop Luis Rivas, who completed a throw to first to finish a double play on Jeff Keppinger.

PITTSBURGH -- Dusty Baker wasn't complaining about the wet and cold when he summed up the last three days in PNC Park, although he could have been.
His Cincinnati Reds were worse than the lousy weather.
"It was a bad day and a worse weekend," the manager said after the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep yesterday with a 9-1 victory. "We didn't play well in any department."

Bad weather rains on Cueto's routine
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

PITTSBURGH - Unexpected rain right before Sunday's 1:35 p.m. start had the Pirates unsure of when the game would start exactly. The grounds crew covered the home plate area and the pitcher's mound at about 1:20, took the tarp off about 10 minutes later, then started to put it on again, then stopped.
Meanwhile,, Reds starter Johnny Cueto was warming up.

I'll take an uninjured Bray, or Belisle, or Shearn, or McBeth, or anyone that can throw a baseball over home plate ... I don't really care who the hell it is, whether they throw lefty, righty, or fire the balls out of their ass, as long as it isn't Todd Coffey sprinting out to the hill like a fucking idiot any longer. He's out of chances, in my book. Trailing a game 5-1 is not any great mountain to climb when you have sluggers like the Reds and you're working against the Pittsburgh bullpen. 9-1 is a different story entirely. Coffey should carry a white fucking flag with him when he runs to the mound.

We give up! We cannot win this game, so here's Coffey. Enjoy the meatballs down broadway, courtesy of the Reds!

Now, personally, I don't have a huge problem with Weathers in the pen. He's a rubber-armed veteran that can make 70 appearances a year, has closing experience and is coming off a 30S season. Even if you don't have confidence in him in the tight ballgames, he's a decent insurance policy if you need to spell Cordero for a stretch, and he'll pitch the full inning when you call him.

Sure, Stormy Weathers is no Joba Chamberlain, but at least he's no Todd Coffey either.

The Reds just gave up 9 runs to the Pirates in a laugher yesterday, which ballooned their team ERA ... all the way up to 3.54.

Some trivia:
When was the last time the Reds had a pitching staff with a team ERA under 4.00? 1999.
When was the last time the Reds had a pitching staff with a team ERA under 3.75? 1992.
How about runs/game allowed for the season (gotta figure in EE's and Votto's errors, I guess)? 3.92
Last time the Reds had a pitching staff with a R/G avg under 4? Also 1992.

Coffey's given up nearly 15% of all the runs the entire team has allowed. He's only 1 run shy of equaling the RA of Affeldt, Burton, Cordero, Lincoln, Merker, and Weathers combined.

Addition by subtraction. DFA Coffey.

Those are some nasty looking stats Dryden. They hurt too because they are so true. Damn!

I said back in March when it looked like we might actually have our rotation at Harang, Arroyo, Cueto, Bailey and Volquez at some time this year, that this offense would struggle to score 3 runs per game. I wish I would've been wrong now. :(
