Pirates 6Reds 5
Volquez keeps it close, bullpen loses it

DAYTON DAILY NEWS

CINCINNATI -- Elimination Day was inevitable, a foregone conclusion for the Cincinnati Reds, and it came on a steamy night in Great American Ball Park.
A 6-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates last night officially eliminated the Reds from the National League Central title race, but unofficially they eliminated themselves in early May when they first hit double figures in the games-behind column.
Of more immediate significance, Edinson Volquez did not get his 17th win, turning over a 4-4 tie after seven innings. But Jeremy Affeldt (1-1) and Mike Lincoln each gave up a run in the eighth to leave Volquez at 16-5.

Jolbert Cabrera, left, is hugged by his Reds teammates after hitting the winning single to left field.

CINCINNATI -- The grin on Jolbert Cabrera's face was as wide as both batter's boxes and he placed a finger in front of his lips and said, "Shhhh. Don't tell Lou Piniella. That's two walk-offs for me against him."
Cabrera should know, Piniella is like an elephant (only meaner). He doesn't forget.
The latest was a thriller in Great American Ball Park yesterday, a three-run ninth-inning rally that ended abruptly when Cabrera pulled a line drive single to left to score the winning run in a 4-3 victory for the Cincinnati Reds over the Chicago Cubs.

Dont look now but these young Reds have some life in them. They've rallied late numerous times this past month and really hung tough when they new they were out of it. Chris Dickerson is a find. Putting him in there with Votto, Bruce, Phillips and E5 (at times) is actually fun to watch! The pitching of Bronson Arroyo has been amazing this past month and a half. The guys' arm isnt made of the same things yours and mine are thats for sure. These guys are eliminated but they're having a blast making it tough on the clubs at the top. Tonight they rallied once again in the 9th to take down the Brew crew. I'm seeing tremendous similarities to this club and the one Arizona has built. A couple of major pieces need to be added somehow and the differences in the manager are the major obstacles. Still, they dismantled in mid season and have done at least as well as before if not better. We still have to get Patterson out of the lineup but overall, its much much better than I imagined in my head a month ago.

Reds send Brewers to 3rd straight loss

Wednesday, September 10, 2008 3:15 AM

ASSOCIATED PRESS

MILWAUKEE -- Brandon Phillips' two-out RBI single in the 11th inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 5-4 win over the slumping Milwaukee Brewers last night.
The Brewers missed a chance to gain ground in the playoff race. They remained 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and three ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the wild-card standings with 17 to play.

Ramon Ramirez is up with the big club and Todd Coffey was DFA'd.

It's been a good week.

Hysterically, while the Reds are in Milwaukee, the Brewers just claimed Coffey!

He's like a cheaper version of Eric Gagne. They should be pleased.

I'm not paying attention at all, but I hope the Reds do to the Brewers what they did to us in 1999 to close the season.

Reds let Sabathia, sweep slip away

By Emmett Prosser ? Enquirer contributor ? September 11, 2008

MILWAUKEE - Scoring chances against CC Sabathia are about rare as a winning lottery ticket. If you get one, you better cash it in.
The Reds had Sabathia right where they wanted him Wednesday afternoon, but somehow, Milwaukee's big lefty wiggled away.
Sabathia got out of a major sixth-inning jam and former Red Mike Cameron hit a two-out single off of David Weathers in the bottom of the eighth as the Reds wasted an excellent start by Bronson Arroyo and missed a golden chance to sweep the Brewers in a 3-2 loss at Miller Park.

A good friend of mine is on a plane headed to Cincy tonight...I'm sure you guys have heard of Micah Owings haven't ya? I'm jacked!

Pass along our condolences for having to leave an organization like the Dbacks and come to one like the Reds. We are extra special sorry for the whole Dusty Baker thing, we feel your pain.

Also, I would like to personally apologize in advance for having to lump him with the rest of the players and rip him apart when they start sucking ass again next year. It's nothing personal.

Reds can't escape from strong Webb

Saturday, September 13, 2008 3:43 AM
By Andrew Bagnato

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Brandon Webb tossed eight shutout innings to become the National League's first 20-game winner, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 last night to end a six-game losing streak.
Webb (20-7) outpitched Aaron Harang to earn his first victory since Aug. 21, giving the slumping Diamondbacks a sorely needed lift. Arizona remained 3 1/2 games behind the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who won 7-2 at Colorado.

Ironic, I usually turn to Buckeye football to escape Reds baseball. So last night, I turn to Reds baseball to escape Buckeye football.

Fucking Micah Owings ... Doubles in the winning run as a pinch hitter in the 10th inning in Arizona!

And what does Adam Dunn do in the same game? Bottom of the third, Volquez walks the bases loaded and forces Dunn into a 1-2-3 DP.

Reds win on Patterson's HR

Monday, September 15, 2008 3:05 AM

DAYTON DAILY NEWS

PHOENIX -- It wasn't like watching paint dry, it was like watching the third coat of paint being dried with a hair dryer.
It would have been more exciting to sit in the middle of the Sonoran desert at high noon counting cacti, or maybe watching the Cincinnati Bengals, than watching the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks foist futility on 27,297 yesterday in Chase Field.
