Recruiting Strategy

After reading many thoughts and opinions on the 2012 recruiting class. I may have figured it out (With the exception of the OL recruiting). As an EXAMPLE, during Coach Tressels reign as HC, he had a couple of questionable classes, one in particular that stands out is his 2003 class, here is the list:

Marcel Frost, TE - Discipline/Transferred
Ira Guilford, RB/CB - Transferred
Louis Irizarry, TE - Discipline/Transferred
Sian Cotton, DT - Academics
Reggie Smith, LB - Transferred
Brandon Maupin, DT - Academics/Discipline
Dareus Hiley, WR - Academics
Devin Jordan, WR - Injuries
Curt Lukens, S - Injuries

Donte Whitner, CB - PRO ( 5 Star)
Ashton Youboty, CB - PRO (3 Star)
Kirk Barton, OL - PRO (3 Star)
David Patterson, DL - Drafted (4 Star)
Todd Boeckman, QB - Starter (3 Star)
Anthony Gonzalez, WR - PRO (4 Star)

That is 6 of 15 players that contributed on the field while at OSU from the 03 class.

Today and with Ohio State's current situation, I think Luke's approach is getting kids that are Buckeyes. I believe the staff is primarily targeting kids that WANT to be at TOSU no matter the situation. They are loyal, hard workers in the classroom as well as on the field. Yes it can be considered a weak class as far as star ratings (Which I do not put much weight) but we are getting solid student athletes.

What this post implies is Ohio State survived a couple of weak classes during JT's tenure, esp. the 03 class, and still played great football. IMO, I feel the 2012 class, ultimately, will be much better than that 03 class. If OSU close with (uncommitted players w offers) Washington (+ 1 more d-lineman), Davidson (+ 1 more O-lineman), Bradley, and Roger Lewis, I will consider this an excellent class based on all the bull (Mark May) that's been flying around since December 2010. I agree with this for many of the reasons you expressed and the general reality that three or four classes, sometimes even a fifth, that all mesh together to form what we see on the field. I also agree that there will be several long term players we will be glad that became Buckeyes.

To add just a little bit more optimism, Ohio State will be experiencing its own honeymoon period with a new head coach following this season, whether that be Luke Fickell or someone else (hopefully Fickell, but the point stands either way).

When the reality of the season hits in full force, Michigan's honeymoon will be over, or at least severely diminished, giving the Buckeyes the chance to jump back into the mix with both barrels blazing for what already looks like a very strong 2013 class.

Best case scenario, Ohio State has an above average to great season in 2011, Fickell signs an extended contract, Michigan tanks, and Fickell goes wild on the recruiting trail in 2013 and continues to distance the Buckeyes in talent from tsun, with 2012 being a one year blip which resulted from the worst period in Ohio State recruiting in at least the past decade combined with the excitement of a new coaching hire for tsun.

One class won't make or break either school, so there is no reason Ohio State can't continue their dominance on and off the field in 2013 and beyond.

This summer is tsun's high water mark. Once the sanctions are known, the games are played and the coaching staff settled in its OSU's turn. It will take Hoke about 3 classes in a row like the one he is getting now just to get back to an even playing field until then its RR's team with a worse offense and a slightly better defense. In other words-not very good.

Lets see how much luster is left on the Hoke blowup doll after he drops another couple of games to MSU and OSU. He might be in hot water before he ever gets those 3-4 monster recruiting classes he needs.

For that to fully be the best case scenario, tsun then realizes there is no hope and drops football completely.

How many programs would love to be in a position of looking at our '12 class and calling it a down year relative to the past decade? Wow... We are still blessed with a pretty darn good class even with a couple of those who got away. Blessed.

Something tells me after all this is said and done, some of these kids who would have been Buckeyes any other year will look back and wish they would have made a different choice of universities. Just saying...

Honestly Michigans recruiting class isn't much better then ours if you look at the film. The one player I wish we would of gotten is Strobel, not Kalis.

When I said worst period in at least the last decade I meant in terms of challenges faced by the staff (pending sanctions, temporary lack of long term stability, loss of a legendary head coach, etc.) not necessarily the quality of the commitments, even though based on offer lists alone the latest commits are a bit lacking. However, given the intangibles (true buckeyes, hard workers on and off the field) there is no reason to think they won't have successful careers in scarlet and gray.

I look at a lot of the players in 2012 as the glue that holds championship teams together. Ohio State has it's stars, will continue to get stars, and will even find some stars in the 2012 class. However, it takes more than stars to win championships, and the intangibles that many if the players in the 2012 class have will be a huge asset in the locker room and on the field.
