Bearcats battle back to beat Coffman in double overtime (Jeff Cumberland) - This Week PREMIUM

Bearcats battle back to beat Coffman in double overtime

Thursday, March 10, 2005

By JARROD ULREY

ThisWeek Clintonville
Without question, Brookhaven High School senior boys basketball player Jamelle Cornley had one of the finest stretches of his prep career during the fourth quarter and throughout two overtimes in a Division I district championship game last Saturday against Dublin Coffman in the Fairgrounds Coliseum.

There were moments during the 58-55 double-overtime win when 6-foot-6 junior post player Jeff Cumberland came up just as huge, particularly late in the third quarter.

That's when he and Cornley had a little chat.

"What ended up happening was that I was having a tough time with (6-foot-9 Coffman post player Kyle) Madsen, and Jeff came up to me and said, 'Why don't we switch,' because he's a tougher jumper than I am," Cornley said. "After that, Madsen was not as much of a factor (with Cumberland guarding him)."

Coffman stopped attacking on offense and seemed content to protect the 13-point lead it took into the final quarter. The Bearcats were aggressive offensively, while Cumberland held Madsen scoreless during both the fourth period and in the first overtime.

Madsen, a first-team all-district selection along with Cornley, was held to 11 points.

Cornley, who won his second consecutive district Player of the Year honor, finished with 23 points and 17 rebounds. He totaled 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals in the fourth quarter, added two points and a rebound in the first overtime and three points and five rebounds in the second overtime.

Cumberland finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. He supplied six points in the second half and a pair of free throws in the first overtime. He had four points in the second overtime, including a dunk with 38 seconds left that gave Brookhaven a 58-53 lead.

"I can't say enough about the fire and passion of Jeff Cumberland," said coach Hali Robinson, whose third-seeded team improved to 21-4 while No. 7 Coffman led 41-25 with 51 seconds left in the third quarter but ended up falling to 18-4 with the loss. "He matched Jamelle Cornley. No one has been tougher on Jeff than me because I see a lot in this young man and I realize how important it is for him to play like this if we're going to get back to (the state tournament)."

Brookhaven, which beat Coffman 52-41 in a regional semifinal last year and has won six consecutive district titles, moves into a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. today against Mifflin.

Senior Brooks Hunton -- one of five key Coffman players between 6-4 and 6-9 -- had eight points and three rebounds in a third period in which Coffman increased the lead from 23-15 at halftime to as much as 16 on two occasions.

With Marvin Jones on the bench with his fourth foul, junior backup point-guard Jawanza Robinson completed a three-point play with one second to go in the third that cut it to 41-28 and seemed to spark the Bearcats.

Cornley grabbed a steal in the opening seconds of the fourth period and made the first of two foul shots, and the Bearcats cut it to 43-37 on a putback by Cornley with 4:32 remaining.

With Coffman leading 47-43, Cornley scored with 27 seconds to go and then made a putback with 17 seconds left to send it to overtime.

Coffman stalled for almost two minutes of the first overtime after Matt Heine gave it a 50-47 lead on a 3-pointer 14 seconds into the period, but Brookhaven battled back again to send it to a second extra session. Brookhaven took a 55-53 lead with 2:22 left on a basket by Cumberland and never trailed again.

Can you blame somebody whose full name is Padraic McKee Mullen for having an affinity for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame? But don't count Ohio State out of the race for the prep star just yet. The Buckeyes are not among the institutions to have offered so far, but they've been in contact via the mail and are very much in Mullen's sights.

Haynes latest addition to OSU football coaching staff - SNP

Haynes latest addition to OSU football coaching staff

By SETH SHANER

At least one person knew the day would come when DeSales High School graduate Paul Haynes would be on Ohio State University's football staff.

"My wife Kim told him some day he'd coach at Ohio State," current Dublin Coffman athletics director and former DeSales football coach Tony Pusateri said. "Son of a gun she was right, but he has everything it takes to be successful. He's a family person, and when he's not working, he'll be with them."

Pusateri could be considered an expert when it comes to Haynes.

Haynes, a 1987 Stallions graduate, played for him up until his junior year at DeSales at both offensive and defensive end. Kim Pusateri's prophecy came true when Haynes was hired last week by OSU coach Jim Tressel to take the place of Mel Tucker as the Buckeyes' defensive backs coach.

"I've been coaching a long time and he's one of my favorites," Pusateri said. "He's a team person. Whatever was best for the team was what Paul did. He got along with everyone and he worked hard.

"He was one of the best players I ever coached. Of all the years I coached, Kijana Carter (of Westerville South) was right there at the top, but Paul was right there. He did it all; offense, defense and special teams."

After a knee injury going into his senior year of high school, Haynes walked on at Kent State and became a four-year letterman.

"It wouldn't have surprised me if he was playing in the NFL, honestly," Pusateri said. "He went the other route and we've followed Paul since Day One. He was one of our favorites.

"He is very personable and he's very respectful. He gets along with his peers, but he can also communicate so well with young guys."

It's Haynes' ability to relate with young players that makes Pusateri see him as a valuable asset for the Buckeyes.

"Paul knows Ohio and also has recruited Georgia and Florida, so that made him a very attractive candidate," said Tressel in a press release. "Everyone we talked to had nothing but great things to say about him, and he is very impressive one-on-one. All of our coaches felt like he was going to fit in very nicely on our staff. And I know he is excited about the opportunity to come home."

Haynes comes to OSU from Michigan State, after stops at Louisville, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Kent State, Ferris State, Bowling Green and DeSales.

"Coming home like this is a dream come true for me," he said in the press release. "From the day I began coaching, it was always a goal of mine to coach at Ohio State. To have the opportunity to work for Coach Tressel makes it even more special.

"If you grow up in the state of Ohio and are interested in coaching, you know the Tressel name. I have tremendous respect for him and am looking forward to being on his staff."

Haynes joins fellow DeSales alum Luke Fickell on OSU's staff.

"I'm sure every school has kids like Paul Haynes and Luke Fickell, but at DeSales it seemed like for a while it was the majority," Pusateri explained. "It was more like the rule. The kids played for the team and they worked hard and didn't ask questions."

The many calls from Haynes to Pusateri won't be as hard on the phone bill now that the two will be a mere 20 miles apart.

"We talked almost weekly," Pusateri said. "I know when he left BG and moved on he called me twice a month forever just to say hi. I'd hang up the phone and say, 'Can you believe that?' "
