recomend me a good video capture prog

anyone know if a good video capture program? on a whim i purchased an avertv hd dvr. bascially its a video card with hdmi in. plays excellent hd quality video over my pc but the stupid thing won't allow me to record for obvious enough reasons. im thinking a good video capture program will solve my problem. any thoughts?

Oh. . . and I have a program (which has since been outlawed and is unavailable) that I will try to find. . .
