Unless we have Armageddon there will be a new college football national champion. Michael Geiger’s 41-yard field goal as time expired gave No. 9 Michigan State 17-14 win over No. 3 Ohio State, causing a shakeup in the College Football Playoff situation.
When the new rankings are announced, the defending national champion Buckeyes will likely be way on the outside looking in thanks to a pathetic performance on both sides of the ball. An offense with two-teams’ worth of play-makers produced just 132 total yards and just 86 on the ground with what’s supposed to be one of the best offensive lines around. The defense was gashed for 203 yards rushing, missed tackle after tackle. and had three critical offside penalties against Joey Bosa, the third of which turned a fourth-and-eight into a fourth-and-three and helped keep MSU’s game-tying drive alive in the fourth quarter.
The Buckeyes also made poor decisions on option plays. The big concern is the offense. Both touchdowns came after Michigan State turnovers. The first came late in the first and gave Ohio State a short field and it still took 10 plays to go just 32 yards. The second came when a punt was muffed by a Michigan State player and OSU got the ball at the MSU six-yard line.
Other than that there were no sustained drives. The one deep pass OSU tried was wide open to Braxton Miller, but J.T. Barrett overthrew him by a couple yards. Ezekiel Elliott ran just 12 times for 33 yards and could never get going behind an offensive line that was overpowered by Michigan State’s defensive line.
This is supposed to be an offense with tons of playmakers but no plays were made. In all honesty, no plays were really attempted. Too many Barrett keepers. Not enough Zeke and Miller.
The outgoing seniors and juniors deserved a better effort by the coaches, especially whomever is calling the plays on offense. Ohio State can still make it to the B1G title game, but it needs to win at Michigan Saturday and hope Penn State can upset Sparty in East Lansing.
But quite frankly, with the play calling today Ohio State only deserves to go to the Toilet Bowl.
