Real Life Wednesdays (Real World)

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Fiesta Bowl announced The Ohio State University (OSU) as the winner of the 2022 Community Service Award today during the 2022 NACDA & Affiliates Convention. Ohio State received the award for its Buckeyes Care and LiFEsports initiatives.

The Community Service Award will be formally presented to Ohio State on Saturday, Sept. 24 during its Big Ten football matchup against Wisconsin at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

“We are extremely honored to be the 2021-22 recipient of the NACDA Community Service Award,” said Gene Smith, Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletics Director. “Ohio State student-athletes, coaches staff and our pillar partners truly are making an impact in central Ohio and beyond, and I want to thank NACDA and the Fiesta Bowl for recognizing our commitment and presenting us with this important award.”

Now in its sixth year, the Fiesta Bowl Community Service award was designed to recognize NACDA member institutions in Division I honoring exceptional athletics departments that make volunteerism and community service a way of life. A five-person committee consisting of athletics directors across the country and representatives from the Fiesta Bowl and NACDA aided in selecting Ohio State as this year’s award winner. The OSU athletics department will receive a trophy from the Fiesta Bowl for permanent display on campus.

“Ohio State’s LiFEsports camps and Buckeyes Care programs both support the direct needs of the community and are directly aligned with the Fiesta Bowl’s pillars of serving through youth, sports and education,” said Fiesta Bowl Board Chair Randal Norton. “We know Gene Smith is committed to positive youth development, fostering a caring community and instilling an inclusive culture that enables student-athletes to give back to the community and help those in need.”

“We are thrilled to partner with the Fiesta Bowl and recognize NACDA Past President Gene Smith and his hardworking staff and student-athletes at Ohio State with the Community Service Award this year,” said NACDA Chief Executive Officer Bob Vecchione. “Ohio State is NACDA’s neighbor to the south, and we know firsthand that the Buckeyes are synonymous with leadership, success, and pouring into to their community that supports them on a local and regional scale. The positive impact these programs have had sets a great example for the holistic development of student-athletes across the country.”

LIFE AFTER FOOTBALL. With how well Ohio State football recruits high school talent, every player who sets foot in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center has reason to believe he’ll make it to the next level.

However, the reality is that many more Buckeyes don’t make the NFL than the ones who do. That's why Ohio State holds events like the Career & NIL Expo for the football program, an event that allows all Buckeyes – the ones who will be drafted and the ones who won't – an opportunity to benefit from their name, image and likeness and learn about future employment opportunities while they represent the scarlet and gray in the school's most prominent sport.

The 2023 edition of the event took place on Tuesday, with over 40 Central Ohio companies packing into the Covelli Center to meet with players, who traded in pads and jerseys for suits and ties.

BUCKEYES TO PARTICIPATE IN BIG LIFE SERIES: SELMA TO MONTGOMERY

This weekend, the Big Ten Conference is leading an educational journey for selected student-athletes, coaches, administrators and stakeholders, with five members of the Ohio State community participating. The ‘Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery’ is an immersive and transformational experience that will follow the steps of the United States civil rights movement during a trip to Alabama. This is the second year in a row the conference is hosting the trip.

Four Ohio State student-athletes and a Buckeye coach will participate in the experience this year: men’s gymnast Jadon Roberson, women’s swimmer Nyah Funderburke, Lacey Stringer of the women’s track and field team, fencer Hamsika Arnipalli and field hockey associate head coach Kate Lipton. The trip, which includes museum visits, speakers, a community service project and a march across theEdmund Pettus Bridge, will be Friday and Saturday.

The ‘Big Life Series’ is a cornerstone initiative led by the Big Ten Equality Coalition and highlights the conference’s ongoing commitment to examine and search for answers to the racial, social, religious and cultural challenges faced by our country. This year’s event will also feature participants from a handful of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), including Florida A&M University, Howard University and North Carolina A&T University. The centerpiece of the Alabama experience will be a march across the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, site of the 1965 Bloody Sunday attack.
