RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

New melodramatic spin on the Clarett story

If you look at the ESPN college football online video segments today, there is a video focusing on how "trouble continues to follow Maurice Clarett".

Presented opposite the Ivan Maisel story picking Ohio State as the 2006/7 college football top team, and set in a music score that is so thick with melodrama you would swear a beloved national leader had just died, the video reminds us of the sad tale that Maurice Clarett is just such a tragedy.

My take is not melodrama. It is that Clarett is an object lesson for every high school and college athlete that thinks he is bigger than his team and who allows greed to cloud his judgement.

The Clarett story is no longer of interest to anyone. Maybe he can sort out his life and Clarett will be a story we want to read about, but until then, drop it ESPN, okay?

But they won't because it's fun to take shots at a winner (Ohio State) in the interest of subjective and fair journalism:biggrin: <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

ridiculous

The Baylor University Basketball scandal that involved MURDER and a Head Coach Covering It Up hasn't received the press that MoC has......

.....The Buckeye Nation is so big and so influential in sports that as many people that love and cherish OSU sports also hate and pile on OSU at every opportunity they get (as lame as most of those opportunities are)

Id say it is more of MoC continuing to be in the press due to his stupidity...none of the other situations mentioned have been a continuous problem. If anything, his continuing fall from grace to shit to hell has helped the perception of the school as all of his credibility has been destroyed.

ESPN did a piece on him during SportsCenter the other day. There was no news at all in it. They simply rehashed the old story. One line that was pretty annoying, though, was when they said that his whereabouts were mostly unknown since January, but that 'he has left behind a trail of police and fire reports'. That referred to the auto accident in which he was a passenger, and his Aunt's condo burning. Pathetic journalism.

I was reading about the salaries these players make, and wow... either way I was suprised this hadn't been posted anywhere.

Breaking news: Clarett signs with indoor team
1460 The Fan has learned that former Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett has signed a contract with the Mahoning Valley HitMen of the Eastern Indoor Football League.

The Fan's Lori Schmidt spoke with HitMen head coach Jim Terry today, and he gave an open invitation for all central Ohio players to try out for the team. Terry extended a special invitation, which included the starting quarterback job, to Steve Bellisari.

Former Buckeye and current 1460 The Fan pre-game host Joe Montgomery is said to be Clarett’s adviser.

HitMen still looking to sign Clarett
By ED PUSKAS Tribune Chronicle Sports Editor

Jim Terry, the outspoken coach and general manager of the Mahoning Valley HitMen, has been saying for weeks that he wants to sign Maurice Clarett to play for his latest indoor football team.

During one news conference, Terry went so far as to hold up a HitMen jersey emblazoned with Clarett’s name and No. 13, which he wore at Warren G. Harding High School and Ohio State.

On Wednesday, Terry insisted that negotiations between the Eastern Indoor Football League franchise and the troubled former Ohio State running back and his representatives have intensified. Terry appeared on Robert Mangino’s talk show on WKBN-AM 570 Wednesday morning and later was interviewed on WBNS-AM 1460 in Columbus.

Clarett, a Youngstown native, could not be reached for comment. A call to his mother Michelle’s cell phone Wednesday night was not returned.

‘‘We have negotiated a contract with him,’’ Terry told the Tribune Chronicle Wednesday night. ‘‘We hope to have the contract finalized and signed tonight.’’

Terry said former Ohio State running back Joe Montgomery is one of Clarett’s advisers and has figured prominently in the dealings between the HitMen and the former Harding star.

Clarett was Ohio’s Mr. Football as a senior with the Raiders in 2001. He rushed for 1,237 yards as an Ohio State freshman in 2002, when the Buckeyes went 13-0 and won the national championship. But Clarett’s college career quickly spiraled downward in 2003 and he never played another down for Ohio State after scoring the game-winning touchdown in the Buckeyes’ double-overtime victory over the Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl.

Clarett eventually was a third-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 2005, but he was cut in training camp. He is now awaiting trial for an alleged armed robbery in Columbus on Dec. 31, 2005.

‘‘Maurice and Joe won’t be talking to the press until it’s absolutely certain that he’s going to play and that this is going to happen,’’ Terry said. ‘‘We want to make sure it’s iron-clad.’’

Terry reportedly tried previously to lure Clarett to play for the Steubenville Stampede of the American Indoor Football League when he coached that team. Terry also coached the now-defunct Carolina Ghostriders of the AIFL as recently as March, when the team folded four games into the 2006 season.

Terry said the HitMen are planning a news conference for next week to announce further developments. Will Clarett and Montgomery attend?

‘‘We hope to have them there, but there are other things going on with the HitMen,’’ Terry said.

The team has a verbal agreement to play home games at the ThunderPlex in Vienna. Terry said he hopes the EIFL’s current four teams — he listed Mahoning Valley, Three Rivers, Bayshore and Baltimore — will be able to introduce themselves to fans in an October ‘‘showcase’’ at the facility.

ThunderPlex owner Dave Anderson, who has been introduced as one of the HitMen’s owners, said Wednesday that he has not yet signed a contract for the facility to host the football team. He said he is preparing for the PONY Softball National Championships, which are to be hosted by the ThunderPlex later this month.

‘‘Right now this (tournament) is my whole focus,’’ Anderson said. ‘‘I’m not about to let something that isn’t going to take place until at least fall interfere.’’
