RB John Clay (official thread)

He is night and day better as a RB this year than he was as a Junior. The staff's opinions aren't set in stone.

When is anything ever "set in stone" when it comes to recruiting...the point is that the staff has a plan for Saine. Clay's recruitment has little to do with what they plan to do with Saine and/or Herron and Clay could end up at a number of positions, on either side of the ball.

Agreed.

BTW apologies for the threadjack. That's why Brandon has his own thread. :)

I don't see a problem... Wisconsin game will probably start at 11 AM .. so it'll be over in time for everyone (including John and the Badgers) to watch the tOSU-TSUN game...

Johnny will take his official visit to Wisconsin on November 17, when Wisconsin faces Buffalo. On the same day that Michigan plays Ohio State. Take it for what it's worth.
Bernini, as a Wisky fan... if you were in Clay's shoes and were a 100% Wisky lock, wouldn't you still want a free ticket to the UM-OSU game? Ticket brokers are calling this the biggest ticket in regular season history (pro or college).

I'd be more apt to want to be there if I was seriously considering tOSU. But me personally, I'd want the ticket either way. I'd watch Wisconsin-Buffalo on TV in the morning and then go to the tOSU v. Michgan game later. Maybe I'm reading too much into the decision though. He may have some other responsibilities in the area that weekend. Regardless, I think he's a Badger, and I wouldn't doubt if the silent verbal rumours are true. Then he pulls out the UW hat (the UW, not Washington) at the all american game to hype up the program.

FWIW, I tend to agree with Bernini on this one...but if the Buckeyes end up getting a visit, who knows...

Anyway...

11/1

John is thinking he will officially visit tOSU on 12/1 and has watched all of the Buckeye games on TV. He is favoring Wisconsin, Ohio State and Tennessee. John still plans to announce at the Army All-American game.

For example, Lemming has some advice for Racine, Wis., native John Clay, who is ranked among the top high school running backs in the country.
Clay reportedly has narrowed his list of schools to five, including Iowa. However, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Tennessee are considered the leaders at this stage.
"He has a chance to be a feature back right away if he makes a smart move," Lemming said. "I don't ever talk about schools and players. What I do is say is, 'Clay is good enough to be the featured guy. If he comes to Iowa he's a superstar right away.'"
Lemming said he recently spoke with Clay and that Clay actually brought Iowa up to him.
"He doesn't have a real clear-cut view on things right now," Lemming said of Clay, who is listed at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds. "That's why I think everything comes down to the visits with John Clay.
"Everything else now is speculation. If he doesn't come to Iowa, he's making a major mistake for a visit because they could use a back like him."
And although there is pressure on Clay to stay home to attend Wisconsin, Lemming said he doesn't think that will be the deciding factor.
"He's not worried about the pressure," Lemming said. "He's worried about where he fits in the best.
"John's taking his time and debating it. Tennessee says that he's their star. They could have a shot, too. I think John knows that he's a great player. I've watched him on film, and I don't know if there's a better back in the country, really."
Lemming said Iowa could benefit from the fact that Wisconsin and Ohio State both have marquee freshman running backs.

I've never read any of the reputable recruiting analysts try to steer kids to certain schools like Lumming does. People should ignore him. He's becoming more and more out of control. Clay seems to be a level headed kid who will weigh all of the variables. Good for him.

11/02/2006: DEBATABLE: And then there were four for Clay

Park High School running back Johnny Clay has narrowed his college choices down to Nebraska, Ohio State, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Where do you think Clay should go to college?

BY PETER JACKEL
Journal Times
It appears as if The Johnny Clay Sweepstakes is going to extend into early 2007.
The reigning Associated Press Player of the Year, who just completed a record-breaking career for the Park High School football team, said Thursday night he likely will not decide on a college until early January. Clay revealed he has eliminated Iowa from his list, narrowing his finalists to Wisconsin, Ohio State, Nebraska and Tennessee.
His first official visit will be Wisconsin Nov. 17. He hopes to visit Nebraska the following weekend, then Ohio State around Dec. 1 and Tennessee around Dec. 6. Clay said he plans to make his decision around the time he plays in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl All-Star game Jan. 6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
?I?m going to try to do it before then,? Clay said. ?I will have gone through all my visits and will have had time to think about it.?
Would P.J. Hill, a freshman sensation for Wisconsin, possibly prevent Clay from choosing the Badgers?
?No,? Clay said. ?My main goal is to get a college education. If football comes, it comes, but right now, I?m using that scholarship to get me an education, first.?
Plenty of programs would love to give the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Clay that education in return from his unique talents as a running back. Since he finished his high school career by rushing for 236 yards in a 34-8 victory over South Milwaukee ? which gave him 5,016 yards for his career ? there has been little peace in the Clay home, located across the street from Park.
?I?ve gotten a lot phone calls lately,? he said.
?It has been kind of hectic, but I?ve been managing. If they can?t reach me at my house, they call my cell phone.??
As a sophomore at Park in 2004, Clay became the first full-time offensive player ever to earn first-team AP All-State honors after rushing for 1,496 yards. He followed that up with 2,032 yards in 2005, when he led Park to the WIAA Division 1 state championship, and 1,488 for the 4-5 Panthers this fall.
