RB Ezekiel Elliott (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Pro Bowl, All Pro, Dallas Cowboys)

  • Ezekiel Elliott scored his first touchdown as a New England Patriot on a 2-yard Wildcat run in the Patriots’ loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. He would have scored his first touchdown earlier in the game on a 74-yard catch-and-run off a screen pass, but that touchdown was nullified by a holding call against Patriots tight end Hunter Henry.

Sources: Cowboys, RB Ezekiel Elliott open to possible reunion

The Dallas Cowboys and free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott have mutual interest in a reunion, sources tell ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

While a deal between Elliott and his former club has not been reached, both sides are open to it, sources added.

Dallas likes the way Elliott finished the 2023 season in New England, where he played in all 17 regular-season games and saw a significant increase in workload in the final five weeks of the year after top rusher Rhamondre Stevenson was sidelined with a high-ankle sprain.

Elliott, who turns 29 on July 22, had waited until August last season before signing a one-year deal with the Patriots worth $3 million. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Cowboys before being released last March.

Elliott played 51% of the offensive snaps and -- running behind a mix-and-match offensive line -- finished with a team-high 642 yards on 184 carries (3.5 yards per carry) with three touchdowns. He added a team-high 51 receptions for 313 yards (6.1 yards per catch) and two touchdowns.

Just sayin': With Pollard gone, Dallas is looking for some running back help.

Ezekiel Elliott free agency: Jerry Jones says interest in potential reunion with former Cowboys RB is 'real'

Dallas released Elliott last offseason, but reconnected with him on Wednesday

Free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott was once one of the faces of the Dallas Cowboys, and the fan favorite may soon be once again. CBS Sports HQ senior NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that the Cowboys are meeting with Elliott's representation at The Star in Frisco on Wednesday a day before the start of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones and team COO and EVP Stephen Jones confirmed the report Thursday night.

"We spent a lot of time with Zeke yesterday" Jerry Jones said.

"Yeah, we just bumped into each other and visited a little bit," Stephen Jones said with a laugh. "Had a little beer and moved on."

However, the pursuit of Elliott isn't adding any shades of gray to Dallas' plan to look at potentially selecting a running back in the draft's second or third round Friday evening.

"No," Jerry said when asked if Elliott will impact their draft plans.

Nor will having his name show up on their 2024 salary cap sheet twice, once for a new contract and another time for the just over $6 million in dead cap space that they have for releasing him early from the six-year extension they signed him to years ago.

"Not even a consideration,'' Jerry said. "He's earned that $6 million. We've already spent it. You have to pay that whether he's here or not. It won't affect one thing with how he would help our team this year.''
