He hears the whispers when he walks through the mall. He catches their eyes when he settles into the blocks on the track. It?s been like this for awhile, but it still strikes him as strange.
Ezekiel Elliott doesn?t understand what the big deal is.
?It?s pretty weird,? the John Burroughs senior standout said. ?People kind of look at me funny, like when they have to race me they get kind of scared. I?m not used to that.?
You have to forgive the competition if they find Elliott to be something otherworldly. A 6-foot, 210-pound bolt of lightning, the 17-year-old Elliott has spent his high school career turning heads and dropping jaws. Whether on the football field or the track, it?s not every day someone with Elliott?s talents comes along.
The Ohio State-bound Elliott put on a show every week during football season. He finished his senior campaign by rushing for 2,155 yards and 40 touchdowns. He caught 16 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns and then wracked up 523 yards and six touchdowns on kick and punt returns. He led the Bombers to a 13-1 record and their third straight Class 3 title game. For the third straight season, though, Burroughs took runner-up honors.
In the winter he started at small forward for the basketball team. He averaged 13 points and six rebounds while shooting 54-percent from the field. The Bombers went 23-3, won the Metro League and finished as the district runner-up.
On the track this spring Elliott has run the table in all four of his open events. Thus far he is undefeated in the 100- and 200-meter sprints and the 110 and 300 hurdles. As a junior he was the runner-up in both hurdle events by a combined eight-tenths of a second. He also took fifth in the 100.
For his exceptional athletic achievements, Elliott is the STLhighschoolsports.com West County and overall male Athlete of the Year.
This is yet another nod to Elliott, who has spent his high school career collecting trophies, honors and recognition. With an abundance of medals, plaques, certificates and the like, Elliott took it upon himself to build his own trophy case. He said it?s still under construction but will eventually be a suitable home to display the baubles that have accompanied his career.
?Actually, I?ve been working on my trophy case since freshman year,? he said. ?I?m finally finishing it up.?

Ezekiel Elliott of Burroughs was his brillliant self in the hurdles and sprints. Speester Denzell Conway of MICDS caught Elliott at the tape of the 100 meter dash. Conway won in 10.90, Elliott was second in 10.95.
Elliott won the 110 high hurdles in 13.77; the 200 intermediate hurdles in 38.94 and the 200 meter dash in 22.56. He ran in 7 events Saturday.
Standout Ezekiel Elliott won the open 100 and 200 and the 110 and 300-hurdles. But there was some question as to where Elliott finished in both sprints, as he had plenty of company crossing the finish line.
?There was definitely a lot of competition today, especially in the sprints. We were all pushing,? Elliott said. ?Overall as a team, we?re clicking on all cylinders. Everyone is PR?ing every week.?

Elliott, John Burroughs hope to bring home first state title
By Mike Elder | STLhighschoolsports.com
Ezekiel Elliott knows heartache. Now he wants to experience elation.
The John Burroughs senior, the top football recruit in the area and an Ohio State University signee, played on the Bombers' football squad that lost in the state final the past three years.
Before Elliott heads off to Columbus to show what he can do for the Buckeyes, he has one more shot at a state team title with his high school?s track and field team. The Bombers will compete in the Class 3 state championships on Friday and Saturday at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, and Elliott and Co. are expected to be in the mix for top team honors.
?This year we have a lot of good athletes,? Elliott said. ?It would be great to cap my high school career with a state team title.?
The Bombers qualified for state in 12 of 18 events, so they?ll need a big bus for the trip to the state?s capital.
?It certainly puts us in position where we can put up a fight for one of the top spots,? Burroughs coach Daniel Harris said.
There?s plenty of competition for them, though. Two-time Class 3 champion Kansas City Grandview again has a very solid team led by junior standouts Jaymes Kelly, who will go head-to-head with Elliott in the 100 and 200, and Harvey Kendall, who will battle Elliott in the two hurdle events.
?It?s a tough double to go from the 110s (hurdles) to the 100 and from the 300 hurdles to the 200,? Harris said of the tough couple days ahead for Elliott. ?Then again, Ezekiel Elliott is a strong student athlete. He only lost one race all year and that was the 100 at districts. He?s managed the four events well.?
