RB Ezekiel Elliott (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Pro Bowl, All Pro, Dallas Cowboys)

DEEP THREAT: MORE THAN HALF OF EZEKIEL ELLIOTT'S TD RUNS COVERED 10 OR MORE YARDS IN 2014

Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott went beast mode in 2014, particularly down the stretch, en route to 1,878 yards and 18 touchdowns. But what’s interesting is that more than half of Zeke’s 18 scoring runs covered double-digit yards (and kudos to 11W reader Fred for bringing this to our attention!).

Any old running back can plow into the end zone from inside the 5-yard line, but Elliott specialized in the quick-strike score from distance, earning 10 of his touchdowns by going 10 or more yards to the house. Think of him as the football equivalent of a three-point shooter.

Even more striking though, is that those longer touchdown runs came at critical moments in games during the 2014 run for the CFP championshi

it's insane that in the early part of the season, I felt a little bad for Elliot that he hadn't broken "the long one" yet. all his TDs, if I'm remembering correctly, were short plow through the line types.

I remember feeling bad that Zeke contributed on a lot of long drives and then had his short, plow-through-the-line reward TDs given to Rod Smith in the 1st Q of predictable blowouts.

OSU RB Coach Tony Alford Was a Fan of Ezekiel Elliott Long Before Buckeye Fans Were

The first time Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford met Ezekiel Elliott was as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, and it didn't take him long to be impressed.

It also didn't take long for the Irish to offer Elliott, who was a coveted 4-star recruit in the 2013 class. Notre Dame thought that he could play on either side of the ball, and there was strong interest from Elliott. In late March of 2012, he took a weekend visit to South Bend, seeing the sites, getting to know the coaches, all of the typical stuff that happens on unofficial visits.

One week later he would commit to Ohio State, leaving Alford temporarily disappointed.

Fast forward two years and Alford was more than happy to accept a job offer from Urban Meyer, and it didn't hurt that he would have an opportunity to finally coach the speedy back from St. Louis.

"I recruited him out of high school," Alford said of Elliott earlier this spring. "I’ve known him and his family for a long time. It’s great to be around those guys."

In fact, it was Elliott and his family that truly impressed Alford. The way they interacted with each other reminded him of his own family, and that stuck with him.

WILL EZEKIEL ELLIOTT WIN THE HEISMAN THIS YEAR?

54325_h.jpg,qitok=LTd5zqpB.pagespeed.ce.YAOyMjKLE2.jpg

When a program captures the national title nobody really wants to hear any crying over spilled milk but the reality of last year's magical season is that if Heisman voting were conducted following the postseason, Ezekiel Elliott would be toting a Heisman Trophy.

Last season, Elliott, as a true sophomore, amassed a ridiculous 1,828 rushing yards on 6.9 yards per carry and 125.2 yards per game as the Buckeyes forged their way from a ranking of 16th in the opening CFP rankings on October 28th to 4th on December 7th to earn a spot in the playoff.

This fall, Elliott will be back as a junior looking to not only repeat as a national champion but earn Ohio State's 8th Heisman Trophy in school history which would vault the Buckeyes to the top of the list.

We scratched our heads when the coaches turned down the #1 RB in the land who was begging to come on board... and ONLY wanted 'Zeke Elliott' from Missouri ???
we now have an NC .. a very valid candidate for the Heisman trophy .. and most likely the 1st RB taken in the NFL draft.. go figure..
thank you Mr & Mrs Elliott @Dawn Elliott

in Urban we trust

URBAN MEYER SAYS EZEKIEL ELLIOTT IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK IN THE COUNTRY AND BEST PRACTICE PLAYER HE'S EVER HAD
Meyer, who has always talked up Elliott for his effort without the football in his hand, again praised the running back with two rather large compliments Sunday morning while speaking prior to Austin Mack's commitment ceremony at the AWP Sports RAS Showcase.
