Not to be critical of Zeke, but there are reasons why you want a full, tucked in jersey. Back to the 60's and my course with Ernie Biggs, long time trainer to OSU athletics. "You want the jersey tucked in to help hold the shoulder pads in place. If the pads bounce, then you don't have them in the correct position to absorb part of the blow in a collision and can create a situation where the player suffers two impacts, the second coming when the pads slam back into position and instead of protecting the player they become a part of the injury equation." (also why you want the helmet to fit tight) In fact Ohio State jerseys in those days had a tail that went over the j-strap and buttoned between the legs to keep equipment tight. In the case of Zeke, I can't see what kind of protection his kidney/liver pad could afford if it's flopping up his back.

Where can I get one of these buckeye jersey onesies you speak of? Bathing suite season is just right around the corner you know

Shoulder pads today aren't held down by the jersey. The equipment is leaps and bounds above what it was even 20 years ago. The only reason for the rule is because the NCAA is taking a page out of the NFL's book. They hate individuality. Anything that makes a player stand out is eliminated.

I don't know if anyone makes them anymore - but yeah straight out of the 1890's in appearance.

Might as well add this comment to Kyle while here - The change in pads has mostly been use of rubber instead of felt and smaller, lighter shells, not in how they are held in place which remains much the same, The issue of fit - individuality - has to more to do with what the players want than what someone in the safety biz has to say. Witness the three times Marshall lost his hat in the Alabama game. That's more times than the total helmet-off-incidents for a season in the 1960's - 70's - When pro players began to rip their helmets off for TV close ups, players began to go for a more comfortable, less tight fit. They're choosing style over safety. The shoulder pads of the 60s had the usual straps that you see today. They were not not loose under the jersey, but one of the functions of the jersey was to help secure the pads.

Might add that today's players have gone away from knee pads in the lighter-is-better philosophy.

My theory is that they want to maximize available jersey space for future NASCARing of uniforms.
