Ezekiel Elliott's Lasting Legacy May Be the Example He Left for His Teammates

If you are attempting to do something for the first time — be it car maintenance, formatting a Word document or cooking a cheese-infused bacon-wrapped meatloaf — and you're not quite sure how it is supposed to be done, you can go to YouTube and find 10-20 videos describing in detail exactly the kind of help you are looking for.

If you are an Ohio State running back attempting to replace Ezekiel Elliott, you can do the same thing, but you'll be absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer number of tutorials that Elliott has put out there for the public's viewing pleasure.

As one of the greatest running backs in Ohio State history, the standard that Elliott set over the last two years might be impossible for some to live up to. That doesn't mean that OSU running backs coach Tony Alford isn't going to try to make it happen.

After all, when you base much of your culture on having a certain standard, why would you try to avoid the one left by Elliott just because you don't know how attainable it is for mortals?

"If you want to be the best, you just had a guy who walked out of the program who left the program as arguably one of the best to ever play here, arguably one of the best in the country," Alford said.

"So they know what it looks like. I think that’s great. They had a great teacher in how to perform like a pro, so I don’t think that’s a dangerous thing at all. I think it’s a testament, one, to the culture that’s been built, and it’s something that if you want to be great, well, there’s how you do it."

Buckeye Football Notebook: 'You have to wake up every day and starve to be a great player'

Replacing Ezekiel Elliott is going to be a laborious process for the Buckeyes. Imagine replacing the world's best one-of-a-kind Swiss Army knife by going to a hardware and searching for each of the individual tools that you now need to replace. It's not going to be quick and it's not going to be cheap.

In a similar vein, Ohio State is going to be shopping long and hard at their own hardware in order to replace Elliott, and whether the Buckeyes go with another type of do-it-all Swiss Army knife or they go with a whole junk drawer full of tools doesn't seem to make a difference to running backs coach Tony Alford.

"When I was at Notre Dame we did that (committee) quite a bit and I’ve been part of both options," he said recently. "I want to win, whatever that takes."

The Buckeyes have been so successful relying on just one workhorse over the years that it seems a bit foreign to think that something else may be in the cards for them in 2016.

After all, we have seen running backs get hotter over the course of a game. They are able to find their rhythm and they begin to wear down a defense. So could finding that rhythm be a problem if the Buckeyes go with a committee approach?

"Some guys would say that," Alford said. "Some guys may say that guys don’t get into a proper rhythm. I don’t know if I so much subscribe to that thinking. I know some of the coaches in our conference that I’ve heard have said that. I won’t say who those coaches are."

Cardale Jones wants Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott to pay up after signing huge deal

But just because they're no longer teammates, that doesn't mean they can't have some fun with each other. After Elliott signed his rookie contract, a four-year deal with nearly $25 million guaranteed, Jones came calling for some money Elliott owed him.

Cowboys Will Sell Zeke Elliott Half Shirt

Zeke1.jpg

Cowboys first round draft pick, Ezekiel Elliott, wore a half jersey at Ohio State and on draft night in Chicago, had some fun on the red carpet with the half shirt look with his suit.

Expect that new Elliott crop top merchandise to hit shelves very soon.

Fanatics.com reports Elliott is outselling Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who was drafted number two overall and top selection Jared Goff of the Los Angeles Rams, in jersey sales.
