WGH’s Herron commits to Ohio State

WARREN — The future of Ohio State University’s rushing game brightened Monday when Warren G. Harding senior running back Dan Herron committed to the Buckeyes for the 2007 season.
Herron, who rushed for 1,500 yards last season, reduced his choices to Ohio State, Notre Dame and the University of Michigan. He said the final decision wasn’t easy to make.
‘‘It was real tough,’’ Herron said. ‘‘In the end I felt that Ohio State is where I want to be.’’
Harding coach Thom McDaniels calls Herron the second-best running back he’s coached and is confident that he’ll have a successful career for the Buckeyes. McDaniels isn’t concerned that Herron will have to compete with Akron Garfield sensation Chris Wells, who committed to Ohio State for play next season.
‘‘Everyone will wonder why he chose Ohio State with Chris Wells there,’’ McDaniels said. ‘‘Dan Herron is a competitor. He’s not going to back down to anyone.’’
Herron hasn’t thought about what impact he might have as a true freshman or if he’ll be redshirted. He echoed McDaniels’ comments about competing with Wells.
‘‘I respect him. He’s a good player,’’ Herron said. ‘‘But I’m not worried about competition. Coach (Jim) Tressel said that the best back is going to play. I’m not going to worry about the other backs when I go to Ohio State. I’ll just try to get on the field.’’
Herron’s older brother Dave is a senior linebacker at Michigan State. Dan said he wasn’t pressured to join his brother.
‘‘He’s happy for me,’’ Dan said. ‘‘He told me to take my time and make sure that’s where I want to be and to go somewhere where you feel comfortable. He never said to go here or there.’’
Dan did hear from Harding graduates and current Michigan Wolverines Prescott Burgess and Mario Manningham.
‘‘They were calling me,’’ Dan said. ‘‘They basically said the same thing (as Dave). They said to make sure you make the right decision and go someplace where you feel comfortable.’’
Herron has other plans before enrolling at Ohio State. Leading Harding back to the Division I playoffs is among several lofty goals. He hopes to rush for 2,000 yards and score 30 touchdowns.
‘‘I’m happy I got this out of the way now so that I can focus on getting us back to the playoffs,’’ he said. ‘‘I want to win ‘Mr. Football’ and play in the Big 33 and North-South All Star games.’’
Herron, who’s listed at 5-foot-9.5 and 198 pounds, also plays linebacker for the Raiders.
