Ranking of all time OSU Football coaches

Kind of to what @Jaxbuck is saying but with a different bent. The think you have to remember is Woody coached in a time where there weren’t the scholarship limits of today. Hell the Buckeyes 2nd and even 3rd strings could beat most other programs. Woody didn’t have to go far to get his players either. Unlike today, Ohio and the Midwest churned out a lot of players.

1 Woody for his titles
2 Tress for cleaning up the Cooper mess/ Michigan record/NC
3 Urbs for taking the program to new heights/ Michigan record / NC

Woody liked getting the kids up in the steel producing areas. This was back when Ohio mfged cars, tires, and other 'rust belt' items. Kids parents were blue collar hard workers, and it translated well unto their children. Heck, he was almost fired after his third year as well. (we all know how that turned out), and tOSU was known as the 'graveyard of coaches'. Soooo, this generation isn't so different, ready to pull the trigger at first hint of problems....Go Bucks! Bri, pretty spot on! PS, I know no one will, but good old 2-10-11 actually started hunting for national targets first. Did pretty well in Texas and especially Florida, as I recollect.

I compare coaches of different era's like I compare players of different era's; How were they vs their peers?

Was Woody the second best coach of his generation? I honestly don't know the answer.
Was Urban the second best coach of his day? I would argue his case with anyone.

I don't know the answer either; but Woody is the only coach to appear in this site's TOP 10 list in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. There were several "legendary" college football coaches back then. Here are a few names from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s:

1 Bud Wilkinson
2 Biggie Munn
3 Woody Hayes
4 Jim Tatum
5 Ralph Jordan
6 Paul Dietzel
7 Bob Neyland
8 Ben Schwartzwalder
9 Bobby Dodd
10 Red Sanders

1 Bear Bryant
2 Darrell Royal
3 John McKay
4 Woody Hayes
5 Ara Parseghian
6 Murray Warmath
7 Duffy Daugherty
8 Joe Paterno
9 Frank Broyles
10 John Vaught

1 Bear Bryant
2 Barry Switzer
3 Bob Devaney
4 John McKay
5 Ara Parseghian
6 Johnny Majors
7 Dan Devine
8 John Robinson
9 Chuck Fairbanks
10 Woody Hayes

Gee, some counted that tie as a win, but I guess others see it as 11 ties.
