In elementary school we called in dodgeball and everyone was in a circle and you rolled the ball but in junior high we called in prison ball and we chucked those red rubber balls as hard as we could

Sometimes we played it with teams and a line down the middle. We also played a version that was just a free for all anywhere on a full basketball court.

This weekend, we were laughing about how people would react to relatively normal speech from the 1960s-1970s. When I was in junior high school, we were lined up to play two forms of dodgeball. There was dodgeball, in which we threw the ball at a guy who tried to dodge the throw from about 10-15 yards away. There also was "smear the q#$%r", in which some poor guy tried to dodge throws from less than 10 yards, with constant encouragement to throw at them harder. I had no idea what that meant at the time.

We played smear the queer too but I remember it more like someone had a ball and everyone chased him, knocked him down, dog piled and whoever got the ball was the queer it repeated over and over.
