    By JAMES PRICHARD

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) ? Kellogg Co. said Thursday it will increase the nutritional value of the cereals and snacks targeted at children or else stop marketing those products to them altogether.

Company brands such as Froot Loops cereal and Pop-Tarts toaster pastries that fall outside certain standards will either be reformulated or dropped from advertising that reaches audiences where at least half of the people are under age 12.

*raises hand* but, what does it matter? how many 12 yr olds and under go to the store and buy fruit loops? oh thats right, its not the parents fault they bought something because their kid demanded they do. my bad, sorry.

I agree that much of the fault lies with parents but there is a larger problem in that we as a nation financially subsidize bad food. Through the farm bill and subsidies to the two biggest piggies at the trough (corn and soybeans) we make it cheaper to eat processed manufactured food that is bad for you (think high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated soy oil) than more healthy alternatives. Today in America, a hundred calories worth of twinkies or froot loops costs less than a hundred calories worth of fresh broccoli or orange juice.

Until we stop subsidizing the corn and soy industries, the economic incentives to both produce and consume unhealthy manufactured food will remain to strong to overcome.

well i agree with you, but the government at a federal and state level has taken initiative to improve the food market. things like coke zero, coke plus, and other improved drinks are products of it. the single biggest problem with foods on the market today is simply hydrogenated oils in food products these days when the products can be made just as easily and cheaply without it. calorie intake is dependant upon the activity, size, pathology, and genetics of a person, but in the end the person controls that. i like the way the food market is turning around, because it is a lot better than say a decade ago. fast food will always be around, but eliminate or cut down on hydrogenated oils, alcohol, smoking, and sedentary lifestyles and this problem is nearly non existent.
