A few weeks ago when Tressel's wife said he would be fired before he ever quit, someone did an analysis of the fate of all of the OSU coached over the last 100 years. I don't know if it was here or another board. If anyone has it, could you please post it again?

Thanks!

I got the answer from Steve H.

Tressel, on top of the world
Cooper, fired
Bruce, fired
Hayes, fired
Fesler, pretty much fired (and went to Minnesota 6 weeks later)
Bixler, did it one year, couldn't stand the heat, left for Colgate
Widdoes, switched places with assistant Bixler because the heat was too much
Brown, left during WWII to coach Great Lakes Navy team
Schmidt, resigned after 3rd straight loss to UM
Willaman, resigned
Wilce, stepped down on his own terms
Vaughn, left to study law at Yale (hey, it was 1911)

Not encouraging for Tress.

I think odds are Tressel will be fired or forced out...I mean look...that is almost going to happen to Jopa. I don't think Tressel will ever be offered a better job than Ohio State...and I don't think he would just want to quit any time soon. I just think he will be Ohio State's coach for a long long time. But eventually there will be a time when he will be forced out.

It was Charley Baughman who got punched in the throat. I watched the ESPN Classic replay of loss to OU in like 1977(?). Woody tried to punch almost everybody whille leaving the field.

Guys these are the good old days. Thank God.

This is true for most coaches in professional sports. In many cases you can coach into your 70s if you want to and it is very rare for someone to be good enough for long enough to keep your job forever. The Bowdens and Paternos are few and far between. And both, until recently were national championship contenders until late in their careers (Bowden might still be).

Provided his health remains good, he'll be here for at least another 20-25 years. The only way he leaves is if his teams go into a sustained (3 or more years) nosedive, he gets ill, or he dies. I doubt the first of the three will ever happen, so...

Tress seems pretty grounded. He may want to just ride off into the sunset someday. I doubt he wants to hang around and hear whispers like JoePa. If he coaches another 15 years and wins another 2 or 3 (or hopefully more) NCs, he may just call it a career when we least expect it.
