Probably not the right place for this post but here goes. If this needs to be moved feel free to do so and I apologize.
Hey guys, Oklahoma State alum and huge college football fan. I actually played football at Oklahoma State and the last game of my career was the Alamo Bowl beat down in 2004. Thanks btw..lol. Anyway, sort of a shot in the dark here but I?ll be in Columbus Wednesday and Thursday on business and want to make it a point to soak up as much of the ?Ohio State experience? as possible. Growing up in Oklahoma I?ve been a college football fan my whole life and naturally have a healthy appreciation for Ohio State. The tradition, the history, all the great players etc. Playing against you guys like I said in ?04, even though we got it handed to us a little bit, is a memory I?ll have with me for the rest of my life. I?ve had this trip planned for a week or so but it wasn?t until about 15 minutes ago that I realized just how close I would be to your campus! Suddenly my mid week trip to Ohio just became a lot more interesting to say the least!

While I?m in town, I?m hoping to check out the campus, bars, restaurants, stadium, all the sights and sounds so to speak. Anything you can think of that a poor little okie like myself might like to see while I?m in town. I?ll be working most of the time unfortunately but should have some free time Wednesday and Thursday evenings. According to Mapquest I?m only like 6 miles from Ohio Stadium so right now my only plan includes working, eating, and getting as close to your football stadium as humanly possible to see what has been described to me as one of the most beautiful stadiums in the country!

But like I said, any tips or recommendations for an out of towner would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I?m a jogger, just 4-5 miles a day, and would love some advice on where I could possibly run around campus that might include the stadium. Thought I might be able to park the rental car somewhere and do that one morning. Maybe bring my camera if that?s a possibility.

Thanks in advance. Go Pokes and Go Buckeyes!

There is path you can run on that goes along side of the Olentangy River and. It goes right past the stadium and along the west side of campus. It goes all the way from the north portion of 270 and 315 into downtown, so there are a lot of places you can pick it up. The easiest thing for you to do if you'll be in the campus area is to park at the stadium or St. John Arena, run over past the stadium and then from there you can either run through campus or head through the Buckeye grove towards the towers and pick up the Olentangy Bike Path there.

The key to a good Ohio State visit is really simple...

1) Jog up the Olentangy River bike trail... You can either start South and jog to the Wetlands Research Center, and then turn around, or start north and jog to the King St bridge, then turn around. This gives you the full view of campus and is really pretty this time of year.

2) On the return loop of your jog, cut between the two dorm towers right on the river. This will take you right along the south end of the shoe where you can peak into the stadium and right through Buckeye Grove. If you go to one of the gates on the west side (next to the river) about halfway, right next to the press entrance, their is a gate that is ALWAYS open. There is usually a security usher there, but he's a cool guy and will usually let people go in and take a quick look if they explain that they are out of towners and just want to see/take pictures of the stadium.

3) After that, head east towards the library by going up the stairs next to the RPAC (gray/red glass building right next to the Shoe). Head into the library and go to the 14th floor (I believe it is called the "Buckeye Reading Room"). It is the top floor and offers and near 360 degree view of campus and the surrounding University district.

4) Go out the east end of the library (opposite end that you came in) and into the oval, which is the center hub of the campus. If you go to hub past the statue and turn right (south) you'll head towards a path that curves right and downhill. Follow that (with the faculty club building on your left) and you'll walk right into Mirror Lake. You can then keep heading east and back towards the towers and back onto the path.

5) If you wanted to see more of campus, you can just do a major loop of the oval and see a lot of cool buildings. Starting on your left and heading in a clockwise fashion, you'll get to see University Hall (the oldest current building on campus), the Wexner Center (really neat art exhibitory hall), John Glenn Hall (really cool building that no one knows what goes on in), and Orton Hall (the geology building that my ex, a geology student, keeps saying is really cool for lots of reasons I can't understand). The end of this loop will take you down to Mirror Lake anyway.

That's the best way to see campus. If you do the jog, you'll see the Schott and St. John as well as the Lane St bridge. You'll also get good views of the med center and the river.

For good, old fashioned, campus food I have two suggestions:

1) The Varsity Inn on Lane and Neil. Best Bargain Burgers on campus, hands down... plus cool atmosphere.

2) Buckeye Donuts. Has been open 24/7 for a LOOOONG time. Another cool unique campus place.

If you have more time than that, you can check out the Student Union which is pretty neat, and it is always cool to just walk down High St. For more grown up things to do, the Short North has a lot of neat bars and restaurants, and the Arena District is pretty neat place to hang out and toss a few down as well.

Enjoy your time at my alma mater!

Get over to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
If you want to see the world's largest collection of Heisman Trophies, the WHAC is the best place to do it.

Oklahoma State is even on one of the trophies in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center (obviously not one of our Heismans.)

Here are a couple of Buckeye Planet threads from the Alamo Bowl you may find interesting...

We had several Cowboys posting on here pretty rigorously at that time too - mostly in those two threads.

It's Page Hall, home of the John Glenn School of Public Policy :wink2:
