Question for the Admins....

Mike80

Big Data is People
  • At work, the knuckleheads who control one of the networks (the one I can access BP from) went to IE7. :smash:

Since I refuse to use IE7 (they locked it down so badly I can't even do my timesheet :pissed: ) I'm using Netscape.

My question is this, why are all the links at the top of the screen (i.e BPspy, Bookie, UserCP, etc) showing up as blocks? The links still work and in the status bar at the bottom, the actual line shows up, but the text itself is gone.

My guess is some sort of translation error between the software BP uses and my Netscape browser, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions?

I use IE7 at work, and have no like issue. Not sure what is causing your situation.

Unfortunately IE7 works ok, except it's so locked down (by the base comm group) I can't even give rep to people here from there. So I was able to use Netscape, which allows me to do mostly everything, except all of the links at the top (i.e. Home, bpWiki, UserCP, etc) are all squares (probably meaning empty characters since I think the version of Netscape available to me can't read .php).....

It's just a guess on my part - I just wanted to see/ask how plausible it is.....

I work for DISA, which reminds me of that commercial where the one guy is working with an office full of chimps. They're so fucking bad, that every single fucking time you either navigate from an HTTP to HTTPS page or vice versa you get that annoying pop-up that "reminds" you that you're leaving/entering a secure connection. They also have it so that every time so submit any form data (i.e., whenever you submit a post here), it gives the pop-up "are you sure you want to send information over the internet?" or whatever it is (I've long since tuned it out). It downright maddening. And the dipfuck officer up at DISA headquarters who made this brilliant requirement genuinely thinks it "enhances security".

Anyway, even with those totally moronic "enhancements" to IE7, I can give rep by right-clicking the rep button and opening it in another window (essentially bypassing the pop-up script). It's a little bit of a pain, but it works...

I used to work for DISA in Columbus at the NOC-C (or ROSC-C or RNOSC-C depending on what person was in charge that day).....I know what you mean

    That fixed it. IE7 :smash:

What version of Netscape are you using?

I use Netscape at work, version 8.1.3, and have not encountered anything like you describe.

Actually I was wrong about the browser version, essentially it's Mozilla, but it's something called SeaMonkey. The version is 1.1.6 and I found out this morning from a little digging that while I put in "netscape" in the XTerm, that had been symbolically linked to the SeaMonkey program.

Also in digging and asking around, there is apparently an issue with the plug-ins used by our version of SeaMonkey and sites that use the type of formatting that BP uses.

Not sure about Netscape issues, but if you can use a USB port, maybe portable Firefox would work. Haven't tried it.

I've worked places that had browsers locked down and no CD drives at all... and then left USB wide open. Yay for slipshod security measures.

I wish I could do just that, but they've more or less disallowed Firefox.

When I was in Iraq, they put CD burners in every machine but then said no one can burn "because no one has Roxio". Except Windows XP has an inherent burn capability built in that wasn't blocked in any way shape or form until we wrote a GPO for it (and built an access group) for the users in Iraq.
